United too strong in Grand Final rematch

Canberra Football Club 0 def. by Belconnen United 2 (Bronte Pyke 20’, Samantha Roff 51’)

Belconnen United proved that they are still the team to beat this season with a two-goal win over rivals Canberra FC in Sunday’s grand final rematch.

The Blue Devils dominated possession from the kick off with the clear intent of breaking down the opposition backline as soon as possible, while their opponents looked to counter when they picked off possession.

After a quarter of an hour though Canberra FC saw more of the ball and looked to make their own inroads, but the visitors quickly shut that down as they took the lead.

A United corner was cleared briefly to the top of the area, but Pyke gathered before swiveling and rifling a shot into the back of the net via a deflection from a defender.

Nat Vasta was called upon just five minutes later to keep out an effort after initially been wrong-footed and that helped keep the lead at just a goal as the sides entered half-time.

The second half was delayed for some time by an adventurous kangaroo, but once it did Belconnen got right to business as they struck again six minutes in.

Sam Roff’s cross from the right after a short corner appeared to be overhit, but looped just over Vasta and into the side of the net to give United their second goal of the match and put them in control.

The hosts looked to get back into the match but were unable to make their few good chances count, and 10 minutes after the second goal Pyke was brought down in the area and the visitors were awarded a penalty.

Caitlin Munoz hit the crossbar with her effort from the spot before putting the follow-up well over the goal and the lead remained two goals.

Maddy Whittall had chances as time wound down but was unable to find the back of the net, and the lead remained two goals as the match fizzled out.

United now turn their attentions to a meeting with Gungahlin United next weekend and Canberra FC will take on Tuggeranong United, looking to get back on the winners list.
