Woden Weston FC’s Women’s National Premier League side are primed and ready for their first finals series in the clubs four year history, finishing 4th on the table ahead of Tuggeranong United to set up a semi-final clash with Canberra FC today.

Securing a finals berth in round 18, Diego Elmoudawar’s young squad have proven to be tough opponents for any team throughout this year’s competition.

Peaking at the right time, a late run of form saw the Wanderers win five of their last six games as they head into what will be an exciting matchup with Canberra FC. The last time these sides met Weston downed their opponents 4-3, coming back from a half-time deficit in a round 19 thriller.

Head coach Elmoudawar was relieved to make this year’s finals, and spoke of what has been an exciting year for the club as a whole.

“I’m very relieved as a coach for the whole club,” he said.

“The 13’s right up to first grade, everyone made finals this year which is great to see.”

“Last year we had a lot of injuries and we had a few girls move on to other clubs, but this year we have had a determined young group come through and show us they can beat anyone out on the park.”

Looking forward to the finals, the head coach pointed out his side’s position going into the game.

“Obviously we’re going in as underdogs, but we’re going in with strong hearts and the girls are determined to win, so bring on Saturday and we’ll see who wins.”

Former Weston Molonglo club member, Bridgit Plummer has been with Woden Weston FC from the start, and the midfielder spoke of her feelings in qualifying for the finals.

“It feels great, looking at how far we’ve come it’s really exciting,” Plummer said.

“Last year we only won 4 games, so to see the girls really come together and win more than double that this year has been amazing.”

Looking to continue a solid record against Canberra FC this year, Plummer feels her side can make a strong push for a spot in the preliminary final.

“We’re going into the game knowing that we can beat them, that it is a possibility, but we willll have to work for it and we’re going to try our hardest and see what happens.”

Geared up and raring to go, Woden Weston FC face Canberra FC at Woden Park Enclosed at 4pm in what should prove to be a thrilling opening match of the NPLW 2017 finals series.
