Belconnen United continued their charge to the end of the season with a thumping 9-0 win over Canberra Olympic on Saturday afternoon.

League leading scorer Maddy Whittall got the hosts off to the perfect start after just eight minutes as she finished off a good move, and United quickly put on the burners as Jasmine Maguire scored two minutes later and Whittall added another in the 11th minute. That three-goal salvo left Olympic reeling, and they struggled to work their way into the game.

Eventually they did, and held firm for the next 30 minutes as they battled but just as it looked like the margin would remain three goals at the break Nicole Jalocha scored to continue her fantastic run of form and stretch it to four goals.

The second half started as the first finished, as Whittall scored after only one minute. Just 11 minutes later Cara Cutaia scored her side’s sixth, before Federation Cup super-sub Jessie Williams got on the board with just under 25 minutes remaining.

It was a stroll home for Belconnen to end the game, as Leah Carnegie and Keira Bobbin scored within a minute of each other to round out an impressive win.

Canberra FC 3 (Wright 11', Chong 21', Hagen 61') def. by Woden-Weston FC 4 (Crittenden 32', 80', Whitfield 60', Bernet 61')

A shot at second spot is back on the cards for Woden-Weston after they came back from a 2-1 half time deficit to beat Canberra FC 4-3.

The hosts started the better of the two sides as they looked to rebound from a 1-0 loss last weekend, and Bridget Wright gave them an early lead to get on their way. Shaquille Chong extended that 10 minutes later, and Mark Risteski’s side looked to be cruising.

However, 13 minutes before the break Woden-Weston hit back as Rachel Crittenden grabbed her first goal of the afternoon to put the Wanderers in a much better position, down only one goal at the break

And it was the visitors who drew first blood of the second half too, as Sarah Whitfield headed home with 30 minutes remaining to draw her side level. What followed was a flurry of goals as Krista Hagen for the hosts and Jade Bernet for the visitors scored in quick succession to set up a very tense finish. It would all come down to Crittenden’s second goal though, and 10 minutes from time she stepped up to a set piece and tucked it home to put her side up 4-3.

The Wanderers held on until the end to draw within two points of their opponents, before a massive matchup with Premiers Belconnen United at McKellar Park this Saturday night.
