City stun Canberra FC with Hawker victory

National Premier Leagues: Capital Football
Round 16 – Review

Saturday 9th August
FFA COE 2 (Daniel Maskin 53’, 64’) Cooma Tigers 2 (Robbie Cattanach 38’, Jordan Lando 90’)
A last minute goal from Jordan Lando earned Cooma Tigers a 2-2 draw with the FFA COE at the Australian Institute of Sport on a cold Saturday afternoon, but the visitors eleven game winning streak was brought to a sudden end by the hosts. The FFA COE were well worth the draw and could have won it even after substitute Lando’s leveller, with penalty claims waved away by the match officials as the influential Daniel Maskin went in search of his hat-trick. The league leaders, heading into the match, the Tigers started well and took the lead seven minutes before the break when Robbie Cattanach received a pass with his back to goal, swivelled and found the bottom corner for his eleventh goal of the season. Goran Josifovski might have made it 2-0 before half-time but wasted two great chances, the first well saved by Jamie Delianov in the FFA COE goal. After the interval it was the FFA youngsters who took control of the match and they equalised when a swift break culminated in Daniel Maskin sweeping home at the far post. Shortly afterwards they were in front courtesy of the same source as Maskin’s shot was deflected past Francois Bangweni in the Cooma goal. Just as it appeared as if Cooma would suffer a costly defeat, up popped Lando to rescue a point and set up a top of the table showdown next weekend.

Belconnen United 1 (Goran Mukevski 89’) Canberra Olympic 1 (Adam Rogic 43’)
A last minute goal from Goran Mukevski rescued a point for Belconnen United in a 1-1 draw with Canberra Olympic at McKellar Park. Mukevski levelled Adam Rogic’s first half goal with time running out to leave the Blue Devils heading to Cooma next weekend knowing that a win would put them top of the pile and in pole position for the NPL: CF Championship crown. In a lacklustre opening half, Olympic broke the deadlock two minutes before the break in somewhat bizarre circumstances. Initially it looked as if Olympic had been hard done by as the match officials pulled up a free-kick when the advantage may have seen Mark Shields clear on goal. Any disappointment in the visiting camp was soon forgotten however as Rogic floated the free-kick in and over the head of Blue Devils custodian Ashley Collins a la Ronaldinho’s remarkable effort against England in the 2002 World Cup. In truth the hosts barely threatened Angelo Konstantinou in between the posts for Olympic in a largely lethargic and disappointing opening half. The second half brought much of the same as the two teams fought out an intense midfield battle with neither team able to get fully on top. As such there were few opportunities in either penalty area and when penetration was made it was quickly snuffed out via a succession of blocks and clearances. Just when it appeared that Olympic had done enough to win it, up popped Mukevski to earn a draw.

Sunday 10th August
Canberra City 2 (Sam McDonald 23’, Jeremy Hegarty 79’) Canberra FC 0
Canberra City posted the upset result of the season as they stunned Canberra FC with a wholly deserved 2-0 success at Hawker Football Centre. Although they rode their luck at times, they defended staunchly and broke to steal a second late on and crush the life out of a Canberra FC team who looked distracted, distraught and a shadow of their former selves. It was a third loss in a row in the National Premier Leagues: Capital Football competition for the visitors who only threatened sporadically with shots from distance as Domenic Giampaolo and substitute Philippe Bernabo-Madrid tested the agility of James Ward with the latter effort bringing an outstanding save from the ‘keeper. City took the lead half way through the opening stanza with a quick counter attack stretching the FC defence and freeing Sam McDonald who clinically finished past Jakob Cole. In the main City was untroubled in defence and they secured a famous victory with eleven minutes remaining. Fc was caught dawdling in possession and City pounced with Martin Deng and Misko Naumoski combining to find Jeremy Hegarty who supplied the finishing touch, sweeping high into the roof of the net from close range to seal an outstanding result.

Woden Valley 0 Monaro Panthers 1 (Thomas James 25’ (pen))
Monaro Panthers moved up into seventh place on the National Premier Leagues: Capital Football ladder with a 1-0 win over Woden Valley at Kaleen Enclosed. The decisive moment came midway through the first half as Jason Denham brought down a Panthers attacker in the penalty area, earning himself a yellow card in the process, with English striker Thomas James keeping his composure to slot home his fifth goal of the season from the penalty spot. The Panthers deserved their first half advantage but after the interval it was Woden who was in the ascendancy. Panthers’ cause wasn’t helped by the dismissal of James for a two-footed challenge on debutant Rowan Blake, the tackle receiving s straight red card. After that Woden pressed for an equaliser with Panthers goalkeeper Rory Larkin in inspired form to deny the hosts an equaliser and a way back into the match. Woden included young Ryan Johnson in their line-up, on debut along with Blake as Head Coach Mitch Stevens rang the changes. For the Panthers the win means they will probably avoid the wooden spoon this season whilst Woden still has that possible ignominy hanging over their heads. They sit just a point clear of bottom club Canberra City.
