Olympic ready to take on Eagles

Canberra Olympic v Edgeworth Eagles - Saturday 15th September - 5pm Deakin Stadium

Canberra Olympic’s last venture into the PlayStation4 National Premier Leagues Finals series came only a year ago, when they fell to Brisbane Strikers on the road at this same stage. That time, they were preparing for a blockbuster FFA Cup clash with Sydney FC, had just won the Grand Final and were flying with a full squad.

But this time, Frank Cachia is preparing to lead a depleted team into the same competition but with a clean slate and no other competitions to worry about. Cachia will field a makeshift backline against Edgeworth Eagles at Deakin on Saturday evening due to injuries and suspension.

“Well we lost [Nathan] Megic,” he said.

“We missed out on Victor on the weekend because he was called away, and then he’s torn his hamstring on Tuesday night so he’s out.

“No Calabria, No Nic Bobolas, no Yarnold, no Megic and no Yanes so it is gonna be a very new back four.”

Despite the Grand Final loss to Belconnen on Saturday, Cachia said he is happy with how the side has responded and come back into training this week.

“I’ve been surprised by how well they have turned it around,” Cachia said.

“I know they’re all disappointed like me, but at the same time they’ve done alright to be perfectly honest.

“They’ve done well to refocus and sort of get themselves in tune for this one, as much as they can be.”

While the side is different to last season’s at the same stage, Cachia said that the side are more focused on the competition this time, with no FFA Cup semi-final preparation to occupy them.

“It is going to be a very different side,” he said.

But having said that, last year that game came just before the Sydney FC match so we treated it a little bit differently than we do this year.”

“It’s much more of a priority this year. Now that we are there and we’re out of the other competitions it’s the last roll of the dice for the season, so you take it as far as you can.”

Gates will open at 4pm at Deakin Stadium, with Adults charged $5 for entry and U/12's $2.
