Sister act enough for Gungahlin United

By Mitchell Keenan

Gungahlin United claimed their third win of the PS4 NPLW Season on Sunday as a goal apiece from Ashleigh and Brittany Palombi was enough to run out 2-0 winners over Tuggeranong United.

The home side started the game strong, and the side’s top scorers Ashleigh Palombi and Georgia Fogarty were linking up well, crafting an early chance after just eight minutes but Ashleigh Palombi fired the ball straight at Georgina Worth in goals and then put the rebound over the bar.

Tuggeranong were looking to ply their counter-attacking brand of football but without the pacey McLaughlin up front, chances were few and far between.

Gungahlin were forced to make an early substitution after key attacking player Georgia Fogarty was clipped in a challenge in the 28th minute, giving Lawrence a chance to make an impact on the game.

The substitute did just that with her first touch, making a good run down the line and cutting back to Alex Martens who fired the shot just over the goals.

The best chance of the half came in the 40th minute, as Ashleigh Palombi found herself with space inside the box after Tuggeranong failed to clear, but the striker could only find the cross-bar with a powerful shot.

The hosts started the second half the sharper side, and the first goal of the game came only two minutes into the half as a silky play down the line from full-back Alex Paterson found Lawrence who then ran the ball into the box and calmly cut back to Ashleigh Palombi who tapped it home.

The chances continued to come for Gungahlin, but Tuggeranong were determined to keep a one goal deficit in order to remain in the game.

These efforts were to no avail though, as the striking sisters linked up for a brace when Ashleigh Palombi cut back to Brittany Palombi, who curled home from outside the box in the 62nd minute.

Tuggeranong had a stint of attacking pressure towards the end of the second half, but the visitors were unable to craft a good chance to test Sophie Rolfe in the Gungahlin goals, and the home side were able to run out the rest of the game.

The win takes Gungahlin to 3rd place on the league table, and the home side will pose a sizeable threat when they host Monaro Panthers at Gungahlin Enclosed Oval next Saturday. Tuggeranong will be disappointed with their recent performances, but they will aim to get back to winning ways against bottom of the table Canberra Olympic at Kambah Oval on Sunday.
