Round 7 National Premier League Wrap - Adelaide City v White City

In Round 7 of the South Australia National Premier League, White City secured a crushing 5-1 win over Adelaide City at Adelaide City Park on Friday night.

Bouncing back from last week’s loss against South Adelaide, Miki Petkovic, Dejan Radojicic and Robbie MacDonald scored first half goals to give White City a 3-0 lead at half time.

Nicholas Bucco pulled one back for the hosts in the second half, but Chad Bugeja added a fourth before MacDonald sealed the win with his brace.

White City coach Robbie Saraceno said it was his team’s best performance this season.

“I think it was our most complete performance,” Saraceno said.

“It was pleasing that the boys responded the way they did after last week’s disappointing result against South Adelaide.

“Our first part of the season has been pretty difficult, but we’ve created a lot of chances and we haven’t been able to finish our good work off with goals, so it was finally pleasing to see that happen on Friday night and hopefully we can continue that in games to come.

“Obviously it was a pretty significant win for us, but we know we’re not going to be able to score five every game, but if we can create the opportunities and actually put some away, that would be a good step for us.”

Adelaide City’s goalscorer Nicholas Bucco lamented his side’s slow start to the game.

“Conceding two goals in the first eight minutes just wasn’t good enough and it isn’t the first time it has happened this season,” Bucco said.

“This week we will try to work on our defensive shape so we can tighten up back there because conceding five goals is just unacceptable.”

Bucco is now the leading scorer in the South Australia National Premier League with eight goals, but the attacker said winning comes first.

“It’s not really important this early in the season; all that matters is that the goals are leading to wins, so scoring in a 5-1 defeat doesn’t mean much.”

After just five minutes, Petkovic followed up a MacDonald header - which was saved by Luke Ostbye - to break the deadlock for White City.

White City doubled their lead just two minutes later, when Radojicic chested the ball down outside the penalty area, before looping his half-volley over Ostbye.

Paul Blefari and Bucco both had chances to pull a goal back for Adelaide City, but White City goalkeeper Joshua Negrean did well to push away both efforts.

On the stroke of half time, a side-footed volley from MacDonald put the visitors three goals up.

Adelaide City came out firing in the second half and pegged a goal back in the 56th minute, when Bucco reacted quickly to tap in the rebound of Joel Allwright’s initial effort.

In the 62nd minute, Thomas Love made a surging run forward before cutting the ball back to Bucco, who sprayed his shot just wide of the goal.

A minute later, Bugeja punished Adelaide City against the run of play, winning possession in the middle of the park, then sprinting through on goal and calmly slotting into the bottom corner.

MacDonald then sealed the win for White City, displaying good hold-up play before turning in the box and poking the ball past Ostbye.

On Saturday, third-placed Adelaide Blue Eagles clinched a 2-1 win against West Torrens Birkalla at the Marden Sports Complex.

Adam Harris and Christopher Annicchiarico scored a goal each to give Blue Eagles a two-goal lead, before Matthew Yeing pulled a goal back for the visitors.

Adelaide Comets won their fourth game on the trot after grabbing a surprise 3-1 away win against reigning champions Campbelltown City at the Steve Woodcock Sports Centre on Saturday.

Campbelltown captain Vasilis Parhas gave his side the lead, but John Karatzas, Matthew Bouraee and Elias Demourtzidis scored to complete a come-from-behind win for the visitors.

MetroStars were held to a goalless draw against Western Strikers at TK Shutter Reserve on Saturday.

On Sunday, West Adelaide moved to the top of the table after clinching a 3-2 win against Croydon in the battle of first and second at the Adelaide Shores Football Centre.

A Ricardo Da Silva brace gave West Adelaide a 2-0 lead, before Sean Mcgreevy scored a double to get Croydon back on level terms, but Nathan Andijanto scored an injury time winner for the hosts.

At the Croatian Sports Centre, Raiders claimed a 2-1 victory over Para Hills, with Elvis Kamsoba scoring both goals for the hosts.

Jacob Williams pulled a goal back for Para Hills, but the visitors were unable to avoid a fourth consecutive defeat.

South Adelaide made it two wins in a row after beating Cumberland United 2-1 at O'Sullivans Beach Sports Complex on Sunday.

Justin Davis gave Cumberland an early lead, but Josh Quaynor and Stephen Hoyle got a goal each to send Cumberland home with their fifth straight loss.
