Socceroos to battle Saudi Arabia at Adelaide Oval in June

FFSA is delighted to welcome the Socceroos back to Adelaide Oval in June, for a FIFA World Cup Qualifier against Saudi Arabia.

The match - which doubles as a home farewell for the squad before the 2017 Confederations Cup in Russia, will be held at Adelaide Oval on Thursday, June 8.

FFA Chief Executive Officer David Gallop said he was delighted that South Australians would have another chance to support the Caltex Socceroos on their road to Russia.

“I’m looking forward to being a part of another large crowd at Adelaide Oval. It is a magnificent theatre for sport and a fitting venue for this very important match,” he said.

“We saw the passion from the fans last season at the Hyundai A-League 2016 Grand Final and we saw it again when more than 35,000 people came along to see the Socceroos beat Tajikistan in March.”

Mr Gallop thanked the South Australian Government and the Adelaide Oval Stadium Management Authority for giving the Socceroos another opportunity to play in Adelaide.

“The partnership we have is good for football and good for South Australia,” he said.

“But most importantly it gives South Australians the chance to come out and support their team. Home crowd support could be the difference.”

“We all acknowledge that by bringing the Caltex Socceroos to Adelaide there are benefits for all levels of the game from the grass roots up to the Hyundai A-League and Westfield W-League levels,” he said.

For Ryan McGowan, the announcement that the Caltex Socceroos are scheduled to play Saudi Arabia in his hometown was fantastic news.

“To represent Australia on home soil is a magical feeling and do it in the city that you grew up in is even better.

“There is nothing better than running out and playing in the Green and Gold in front of your family and friends in your hometown.

“We will be getting to the business end of the qualification campaign and to have a large vocal home support could be the difference in our bid to qualify for the FIFA World Cup.

“I’m sure that my fellow South Australians will be there in numbers to cheer us on,” concluded McGowan.
