R7 Wrap: Campbelltown City v Adelaide Comets
Campbelltown City defeated Adelaide Comets 1-0 at Steve Woodcock Sports Centre in the Round 7 fixture of the PlayStation 4 National Premier League South Australia.
Scorer of the solitary goal was Campbelltown’s leading man Michael Matricciani, who scored his seventh goal in as many matches with a neat finish early in the first half.
For the Comets, it was an afternoon to forget with the defence unable to halt the onslaught of Campbelltown attacks as the Comets’ Davide Zerillo explained:
“I guess Campbelltown played very well, so credit to them,” he said.
“But I sort of think defensively, we weren’t strong enough yesterday (Saturday).
“I guess we were missing our key defender, which didn’t help.
“But actually our keeper pulled off some really good saves and kept us in the game, but unfortunately we weren’t able really to capitalise on our chances.”
Campbelltown attacked the Comets’ weakened defence from the outset with the home side taking the lead after seven minutes.
Matricciani pounced on the initial save from the Comets’ Nr.1 to give Campbelltown a deserved lead, but a minute later the lead was nearly doubled when Keita Minomura narrowly missed the goal.
Campbelltown continued to pepper the opposition’s goal but Matricciani & co were denied by the Comets’ keeper in the 15th, 19th and 22nd minute.
Comets attacking was sporadic and mostly led on the counter by the lively John Karatzas, who was more often than not stopped in his tracks near the penalty area.
Campbelltown intensified its attack in the second half and the Comets’ had to thank their keeper on numerous occasions for preserving the 1-0 deficit.
The pressure was getting to Comets with the number of tackles and challenges increasing by the minute with Zakariah Waters shown the yellow card for a particularly rough challenge on Campbelltown’s Kento Hara.
Frustration was growing among Campbelltown players as they continued to miss out on excellent goal opportunities and it boiled over in added time when Iain Fyfe was shown the red card.
However, Campbelltown held on for their fourth consecutive win to move to second spot on the ladder, whilst the Comets remain in equal sixth with their fourth consecutive loss.
