Round 13 NPL State League Wrap - Modbury Jets v Adelaide Cobras

Modbury Jets recorded their third consecutive victory in Round 13 of the NPL State League, defeating Adelaide Cobras 4-1 in very wet conditions at Jet Park.

Charlie Bowman and Rhys Devlin scored two goals each for the hosts, while George Piliouras got a consolation goal for Cobras.

Modbury opened the scoring in the 15th minute when Devlin cut back to Bowman, who bobbled the ball home from close range.

Moments later, Cobras failed to clear an Aaron Westervelt corner which eventually fell to Mitchell Coull, but the midfielder struck just over the bar.

But the Jets did not have to wait much longer for their second, when Tim Henderson whipped in an inch-perfect cross to Devlin, who tucked home his half volley.

At the start of the second half, Piliouras had an opportunity to halve Modbury’s lead, but his low drive from outside the penalty area went just wide of the post.

In the 49th minute, Devlin made it three for the Jets with a superb finish from long range, swerving the ball past the keeper.

Piliouras did pull one back for Cobras though, charging through Modbury’s defence on a superb solo run, before tapping home.

But Modbury quickly regained their three-goal lead, after Henderson took on two defenders before slipping the ball through to Bowman, who made no mistake in scoring his 20th goal in just 12 games.

No more clear-cut goalscoring chances were created after Modbury’s fourth, as the hosts were comfortable in holding onto possession for the remainder of the game.

Modbury’s good patch of form moves them into fourth position, 10 points behind the undefeated league leaders Port Adelaide Pirates.

Modbury coach Jason Trimboli said he was pleasantly happy with his side’s performance.

“There was still a lot of things that I thought we could have done better, but overall to win the game and to win 4-1 was tremendous; I’m happy for the boys,” Trimboli said.

“We went through a rough patch where we dropped a few games in a row, so the fact that we’ve been able to put three consecutive wins down and get a healthy goal difference aswell is really crucial leading into the next few weeks.”

In Round 14, Modbury will host Sturt Lions at Jet Park, which Trimboli described as a massive game.

“It’s a massive game because it’s a game that I believe we should win and will lead us into Salisbury the following week, which as we know will be a crunch game for both teams.

“I’d like to go into the Salisbury game on the back of a win and keep those three points ticking over.”

After suffering their third straight loss, Cobras have now dropped into 11th place, eight points away from the top five.

Coach Maged Ibrahim said the manner in which his side conceded goals was disappointing.

“I felt like atleast the first half the play was kind of even, but we conceded too easily. That was probably the most disappointing part of it,” Ibrahim said.

“We’ve got to fix up our game defensively because we’ve conceded too many goals; we copped a big result against Hills, and then again against Modbury we conceded too many.

“I think the defensive side of the game is an area we have to improve on because that’s been the issue the last month or so.”

Ibrahim said that his side’s Round 14 clash against Playford Patriots at Adelaide Airport Stadium is very important coming into the halfway point of the season.

“Its massive, if we lose again, we’re losing touch even more with the top five, so it’s pretty important to win these sort of games and it’s very important to bounce back from a disappointing few weeks.”
