Round 4 National Premier League Wrap

A George Aslanidis brace has handed Adelaide Comets their first win of the season, a 3-1 triumph against Western Strikers in Round 4 of the South Australia Premier League at Santos Stadium on Monday.

Comets No 11 netted in either half, with Samuel Tesfagabr also on target from the penalty spot. Michael Russo had equalised for Western Strikers, who are the only side yet to claim any points.

Striker Elias Demourtzidis says Comets can now build on their maiden win.

“We put in a solid performance and deserved the points. We took our chances,” said Demourtzidis.

“In the other games we have only played in patches, whereas in this match we were consistent throughout. Maybe we weren’t at the top of our game, but we did well and created opportunities.

“It was a relief to get the win, with our start to the season in the back of our minds. Now we can build. We are still gelling with one another. It’s a long season, so we’ll just go brick by brick.”

Western Strikers defender Joe Ciarla believes his side are better than what their current tally indicates.

“We have been better than the results suggest, unfortunately we’ve also been our own worst enemies,” said Ciarla.

“We’ve made mistakes in conceding goals and have not been putting them away at the other end. We have to improve in these aspects if we want to recover our position.

“We are disappointed to have not gotten anything here, but in the end we weren’t good enough. It’s still early, we can still make the Finals.”

Comets took the lead in the 18th minute. Strikers goalkeeper Takumi Takahashi fumbled following a Matthew Bouraee cutback and Aslanidis was on hand to tuck in Comets first goal of the campaign.

The visitors hit back when Russo flicked a dangerous Adrian D’Alfonso free kick past goalkeeper Lucas Andreucci, ensuring the sides were level at the interval.

The game turned in Comets favour in a four minute spell shortly after the restart. John Karatzas was tripped inside the penalty area in the 56th minute and Tesfagabr stepped up to convert the resulting spot-kick.

An Aslanidis bullet from distance rifled into the top corner, giving Takahashi no chance and putting Comets two goals clear.

Comets twice had the ball in the back of the net in the final minutes, only for both to be chalked off. Firstly, Demourtzidis was deemed offside from a Bouraee centre, then a foul was committed on Takahashi as the ball bobbled around in the six yard area.

Elsewhere on Monday, Campbelltown City snatched a dramatic 2-1 victory against Cumberland United at A.A Bailey Reserve.

Keegan Osborne fired the Foxes into a half-time lead, only for the Red Devils to stage a late comeback. Jake Monaco equalised in the 89th minute, before Mark Marino netted the winner three minutes into injury time.

Raiders eradicated an early deficit to down West Torrens Birkalla 4-2 at Jack Smith Park.

Akira Miyayama and John Fusco put Birkalla two goals to the good in the opening 11 minutes, although Raiders pulled one back before the break through Brandon Reeves. They completed the comeback in the second half as Nathan Fleetwood netted a double, with Elvis Kamsoba also on target.

Adelaide City returned to the winners list with a 4-2 result against Para Hills at The Paddocks.

The black and whites kept the Knights at arm’s length, with Shane Tobias and Paul Radice ensuring a two-goal buffer by the hour. Matthew Marchioro pulled a goal back, but Nicholas Bucco was then on target. Following Jake Mottram’s strike, Bucco grabbed his second to seal the win.

Calvin Mbarga bagged a hat-trick to give Adelaide Blue Eagles a 4-2 success against South Adelaide at O’Sullivan Beach Sports Complex.

Mbarga netted inside the opening 15 minutes, while Harley Gepp’s equaliser was cancelled out by an own goal a minute later. Mbarga added two more after the interval, before a late reply from Panthers player Josh Quaynor.

West Adelaide grabbed a last-gasp 2-1 victory over White City at Frank Mitchell Park to move to the top of the Premier League table.

Ross Aloisi’s side opened the scoring in the 12th minute through Tom Briscoe, but Miroslav Petkovic drew the Warriors level. Following a red card to White City defender Nathan Bowden-Haase, a late Ricardo Da Silva goal gave West Adelaide their third successive victory.

Croydon suffered their first defeat of the season, going down 3-2 to 10-man MetroStars at Polonia Reserve.

Frank Violi put the Kings ahead, only for Fabian Barbiero to level proceedings. Following Rocky Callisto’s red card, Perry Mitris put MetroStars ahead and Lee Robertson extended the advantage. Andreas Wiens grabbed a late consolation as Croydon drop to second place.
