Jets Fly High After 50 Years

A new generation of young footballers will join with past players and founding members to celebrate Modbury Soccer Club’s 50th birthday at a Big Birthday Bash on April 5th.

The club, known as 'The Jets', was first formed in 1964 after a meeting held in a local fish and chip shop attracted the interest of a handful of people keen to establish a club in the area.

From that meeting the club went from strength to strength, entering the men’s Football Federation competition in 1965 before opening its doors to junior players in the late 1980s.

Club President Francis Pollard said although he is a relative newcomer to the club it’s already become a big part of his life.

“My grandson is a player in the Under 18s team, and before that I was helping to coach one of our junior teams.”

“This is my fifth year with Modbury Soccer Club, and my first as President. The club has a rich history, and a strong foundation, but we are also very focused on the future.”

From its rather inauspicious beginning 50 years ago, Modbury Jets is now the premier football club in the Tea Tree Gully area, with some 250 players from the age of 6 years upwards competing in the FFSA competition.

“The club has established a reputation for delivering an affordable quality football program, attracting more junior players and teams to the sport in Adelaide’s north east region,” said Francis. “Our player numbers have almost doubled just in the last 5 years.”

A strong focus on junior development, the club has a  Saturday morning ‘Jetstars’ program for 4 year olds to introduce them to the basics of football, and this week will be launching a new skills acquisition program for players aged 9 – 13 years who wish to further their technical ability in football.

“We are working hard to bring a new generation of players through Modbury Soccer Club which will see us remain a force in football for the next 50 years.”

Modbury Soccer Club’s Big Birthday Bash will be held at ‘Jet Park’ Golden Grove Road, Ridgehaven on Saturday 5th April from 7pm, and past and present players, and members, together with supporters of South Australia’s football community are all invited to join in the celebrations.
