A Kym Harris brace was enough to condemn the Adelaide Comets to their fourth straight loss in a one sided affair on Saturday afternoon at Marden Sports Complex.

The home side controlled the match from the opening whistle and were mounting on immense pressure for large parts of the half only being denied by the heroics of Comets goalkeeper John Solari.

Blue Eagles centre-back Chris Annicchaiarico believes winning the midfield battle was key to achieving the victory.

“In most games the result is dictated by the performance in midfield and we were happy with the way our midfield protected the defence and supported the attack.”

The breakthrough came from the penalty spot, with Harris’ powerful strike finding the top corner despite Solari getting a hand to it.

The defender was happy with how they played leading into halftime but knew chances still needed to be converted.

“When you tend to put a bit of pressure you may grow frustrated if you don’t take your chances. “

“We were confident that we would put away our chances given that we were creating good opportunities.”

During the break Comets man Stephen Warner felt the belief was still there on getting a result.

“We went into half time and they scored from a penalty and we definitely thought we could get something out of the game.”

However, Warner feels they were lacking in the final third which ultimately changed to the game.

“(We lacked) experience from our forward players, knowing where to be and get the ball in dangerous areas and being more clinical in front of goals.”

Five minutes after halftime, the Comets defence was breached yet again leaving Harris to double his team’s advantage.

Annicchaiarico was not expecting his side to dominate and said going into the game he knew they we were up for a tough battle.

“Comets are a good team and have some dangerous players going forward. We were aware of their strengths. I thought we played well and controlled the game but it was a tough battle for sure.

Warner felt their second half performance was not up to standard which cost them the game.

“We had a couple of good chances were we could of scored a goal but in the second half when they got their second goal there was a bit of lack of discipline and shape which let us out of the game.”

He praised his goalkeeper’s efforts for keeping the team in with a fighting chance.

“John made a lot of saves in the second half. He kept us in the game but unfortunately we couldn’t get it done on the other end.”
