Cup Wrap: Croydon Kings v Adelaide Comets

Croydon Kings downed a hapless Adelaide Comets side 6-1 in the Westfield FFA Cup Qualifying quarter-final on Saturday.

Five of Croydon’s six goals came in the first half, with playmaker Rocky Visconte bagging himself a double.

Frank Violi, Andreas Wiens, Michael Doyle and Shaun McGreevy also got on the scoresheet for the kings, while Sami Tesfagabr provided Comets with their solitary goal.

Visconte kicked off proceedings with a goal inside the opening five minutes. A deep cross by Violi on the left wing was met by Christopher Pepe at the back post who headed back to an unmarked Visconte.

Violi made no mistakes for the home sides second as he put away Weins low driven cross, triggering the opening of the flood gates.

An initial scramble in the box from a Visconte corner saw the ball make its way to the feet of Steven Pepper on the edge of the box. Defender Michael Doyle was in the right place at the right time, as Peppers shot found its way to Doyle, who bundled it over the line for his sides third.

Visconte got his second in spectacular fashion, as he latched onto a chipped ball that unlocked the Comets defence, audaciously lobbing the on-rushing Dylan Newall from just outside the 18 yard box.

Sami Tesfagabr managed to pull one back for the visitors with a nice finish into the far post after he danced around two Croydon defenders, but it failed to stop the home sides momentum.

Newall gifted Croydon their fifth on a silver platter, as he came out of his box to clear an attempted through ball. The keeper found himself in no-mans-land, however, as Weins picked his pocket and slotted into an open net for his eighth in the Cup competition.

Croydon sat back for the majority of the second half, electing to keep possession and protect their lead by passing around inside their back third. But Shaun McGreevy managed to cap off a memorable display with the home side’s sixth.
