R12 Wrap: West Torrens Birkalla v Adelaide City

West Torrens Birkalla came back from the brink to defeat Adelaide City 3-2 in Round 12 of the PlayStation 4 National Premier League South Australia on Saturday. In one of the games of the year, Birkalla showed they could prove to be a title contender.

It didn’t start well for Birkalla as Adelaide City jumped out of the gate to claim a 2-0 lead within a half hour thanks to goals from Marco Mittiga and El Qioin El Wali. From there, Birkalla powered ahead with goals over the next sixty minutes from John-Paul Cirillo, Paul Radice and Taro Kawamura.

Goalkeeper and Captain Julian Torresan said this result gave his side more than just the three points

“We were two-nil down in the first 25 minutes of the game and we knew Adelaide City were a very clinical team and we gave them two very easy goals.”

“So for us to come back from being 2 nil down, it shows a lot of heart in the team and it shows that we can still win games despite being down.”

Torresan was also glad his side stuck to their guns.

“We didn’t really have to change too much…we played our game, we feel we had a lot more possession than they did and in the end it showed with the result.”

In another impressive aspect, Torresan said his side’s recent good run of form has one common denominator.

“It’s fantastic, a lot of teams are having trouble trying to shut us out and we have even got guys coming off the bench and scoring so there’s more scoring power not just from the starting 11.”

For Adelaide City’s Alex Sunasky it was a day to forget for City.

“It was disappointing, especially after being 2-0 up. I don’t think we played well to be honest and it was one of our poorer performances of the season especially after the last 5-6 weeks where we’ve been playing well.”

Sunasky was assured that despite the loss, City can learn plenty.

“I think defensively again, focusing on defending from the front. It’s about defending as 11 and not as individuals.”

City now have the challenge ahead of them and Sunasky said there’s some clear messages for the team.

“We can’t be complacent because we won 5 games in a row, there’s still over half a season to go so there’s plenty of room for improvement.”

“There’s always positives that we’re scoring goals but there’s still plenty to work on.”
