Round 2 Coca-Cola Federation Cup Wrap - MetroStars v Campbelltown City

Anthony Solagna and Daniel Godley were the heroes as MetroStars downed Campbelltown City 1-0 after extra time in Round 2 of the Coca-Cola Federation Cup at TK Shutter Reserve on Saturday.

Makeshift attacker Solagna netted the only goal of the game five minutes into the second extra period, while the goalkeeper – making his 350th career appearance – saved Michael Matricciani’s last minute penalty.

Milestone-man Godley was simply happy to help the team advance.

“It all fell into place, but I was just happy to get a win and go through – and to win against Campbelltown. We haven’t had too many of those lately,” said Godley.

“I knew Michael was tired so it wouldn’t be a powerful shot. I waited until he shot to see where it was going and thankfully got there.

“I thought we played well against a good team. They had chances, so did we. It was an open game.

“Anthony was fantastic in attack. He’s played everywhere and is always exceptional.”

For Matricciani, all Campbelltown lacked was a goal to cap their performance.

“I thought we played well, controlled most of the game and created chances. We couldn’t score and that cost us. It just didn’t want to go in,” said the striker.

“Yet even when we had players go down injured others came in and did just as well. That shows our depth.

“We can take positives from the game. We played well, created chances and restricted them to a few opportunities. Unfortunately we didn’t advance to the next round, but we now look forward to next week.”

The visitors had the best of the first half chances, starting when Oliver Totani was through on goal but denied by Godley.

Jake Monaco had time and space but fired his volley wide, while Totani’s backheel for a Matricciani attempt drew a good save from the goalkeeper.

Monaco and Matricciani both struck the woodwork in a seven minute spell either side of the hour mark, with the latter also denied by Godley during that period.

Joseph Polisena flashed a header just wide at the other end.

In the 110th minute, Ben Moore knocked a cross down only as far as Solagna near the penalty spot and he drilled in what proved to be the winner.

There was still time for late drama. Godley was adjudged to bring down substitute Mark Marino, but the goalkeeper redeemed himself to make a 120th minute spot-kick save from former teammate Matricciani and send MetroStars to the quarter-finals.

Elsewhere on Saturday, Croydon added to Cumberland United’s woes with a 3-1 victory at A.A Bailey Reserve.

Kings striker Andreas Wiens bagged a brace, with Shaun McGreevy also on target. The Foxes temporarily equalised through Brad Grayson, but have now lost six matches in a row.

Adelaide City returned to the winners list with a crushing 4-1 win against Adelaide Blue Eagles at Adelaide City Park.

Anthony Costa got the ball rolling, before Joel Allwright added a second. Nicholas Bucco was on target, then Blue Eagles pulled a goal back through Calvin Mbarga. Yet Allwright sealed proceedings with a late goal, following Chris Atsikbasis’ red card.

Western Strikers overcame State League side Modbury, winning 3-2 after extra time at Carnegie Reserve.

Callum Flanagan opened the scoring, but the sides were level at the break thanks to Aaron Westervelt. An own goal looked to put Strikers through, before Kieran McNally forced extra time. There, Flanagan grabbed his second to ensure a Strikers win.

The Cove were victorious in the all-State League battle, downing Adelaide Olympic 1-0 at Ferryden Park.

Olympic had won the League meeting between the pair, but Cove gained a measure of revenge a fortnight later thanks to a second half goal from Kyle Markham.

Ten-man West Torrens Birkalla eliminated South Adelaide on penalties following 120 scoreless minutes at O’Sullivan Beach Sports Complex.

With normal and extra time unable to separate the two sides it went down to a shootout, where Birkalla triumphed 7-6 to advance. They had earlier been reduced to 10-men when David Thornton was shown his second yellow card.

West Adelaide continued their undefeated start to the season with a 4-1 victory over State League outfit Western Toros at Rushworth Reserve.

Ricardo Da Silva, Michael Alexandrou, Nathan Andijanto and Paul Pezos were on target for West, with Toros lone response coming from Alex Jackson.

Para Hills snapped their four-game losing streak with a thrilling 4-3 extra time win over Adelaide Comets at The Paddocks.

Comets took the lead through Samuel Tesfagabr, before Michael Mullen equalised. Steven Ward put the Knights ahead and Mullen extended the lead. George Aslanidis and Matthew Bouraee forced 30 more minutes, but Michael Marchioro fired the Knights into the last eight in the 115th minute. Comets also missed a late penalty.
