Adelaide Cobras Move to Adelaide Airport Stadium

NPL State League Club Adelaide Cobras hopes their move to Adelaide Airport Stadium (Thebarton Oval) will boost performances and finances as they aim to reclaim their place among SA football’s elite.

The ground at Weigall Oval in Plympton will remain the clubs home however the Senior sides will play all home games at the Torrensville ground in 2014.

President Michael Malandris said the move was part of a three-year plan to gain promotion back to the SA National Premier League following relegation from the top flight last season.

"We needed a suitable venue that will help us make that big step up. We're really looking at stability and developing our own young players.

"Then when we are ready to make it back into the Premier League, we'll have a sound foundation."

Cobras currently share Weigall oval with Adelaide Angels Baseball Club meaning they could not access the ground until May.

Mr. Malandris said the club's match day income took a substantial hit as it could only host approximately half of its home matches each season.

Drainage issues led to a poor playing surface and several matches being postponed most years.

Mr. Malandris said the club hoped to play up to six night games at Adelaide Airport Stadium this season in a bid to boost crowds and revenue.

"We want our supporters to see we're in this for the long haul and it's setting us up for a long stint in the Premier League."

Thebarton Oval was opened in 1922 and was home to SANFL club West Torrens until its merger with Woodville in 1989.

The ground, which is leased by the SA Amateur Football League, was also used as a back-up venue for West Adelaide in the defunct National Soccer League.

Cobras has signed a 12-month lease at Thebarton with an option for a further two years.

Adelaide Cobras first home match of the NPL State League season will be against Western Toros on Saturday, March 1, kick-off 7.00pm.
