Quick double for Suns earns comback win

Goulburn Valley Suns has returned to the winners circle after a come-from-behind victory over Springvale White Eagles on Saturday afternoon.

The hosts had taken the lead early in the second half, Hernan De Rito scoring from the penalty spot before Sean Ellis and Firaol Likassa gave the travelling Suns all three points.

The Suns were boosted by the return of Sean Ellis, the Scotsman starting his first game since his knee injury in the Westfield FFA Cup clash with Heidelberg United.

It was Ellis who had the only real chances of the opening period for both sides, his 16th-minute free kick sailing over Nebojsa Vujic’s goal, before his drive was magnificently saved by Vujic after he cut in from the right and unleashed a stinging strike.

The home side however was the one who scored first, De Rito slotting home from the spot giving debutant keeper Munthadar Alghazaly no chance after referee Paschalis Natis awarded a spot kick for a handball in the area.

But the Suns struck back through Ellis with 20 minutes left on the clock.

The Scotsman dispatching a free kick expertly into the bottom corner leaving Vujic to simply watch it go in.

Moments later the visitors took the lead, when Likassa drilled his strike across the keeper into the bottom left hand corner of the goal.

Any hopes the home side had of mounting a comeback were quickly extinguished when Sebastion Lecaros was sent off for an off the ball incident involving Naum Sekulovski.

The Suns should have extended its lead late on when both Likassa and Stuart Vance missed glorious opportunities with only the keeper to beat.

White Eagles threw everything forward in the final few minutes, with a series of corners late on its best chance but it wasn’t to be as the Suns ran out 2-1 victors.
