Richmond clinches late win with Flynn volley

Richmond has clinched a 1-2 win with a late goal over Bendigo on Saturday afternoon at Truscott Reserve in Round 10.

Richmond set the scene with an early Michael Catalano, only to be followed by Bendigo’s Jason Shade heading a goal to equalise the score before halftime. It was a late Liam Flynn volley that earned Richmond the victory late in the match.

Bendigo began the first half aggressively, pushing for the early goal, but Richmond was equal to the task, looking for their own chance.

Despite Bendigo’s early domination, Richmond took the lead after eight minutes with Catalano’s textbook volley from midfield into an unoccupied goal.

Both teams fought for possession until Bendigo finally got its breakthrough, as Shade rose highest to head home from a corner, equalising to make it 1-1 at the 34th minute.

But the goal wasn’t without cost, with Shade going down after a collision with a Richmond player.

The teams then went into halftime level at 1-1.

Both teams came out looking for the go-ahead-goal, but were frustrated at their inability to convert their chances.

Richmond’s Jay Kelly tried his luck with a skilful shot, only to be denied by Bendigo’s Gianmarco D’oria with a parry. Samuel Catherine worked to pounce on the rebound, but D’oria dashed Catherine’s hopes and caught the ball at the second attempt.

Bendigo’s George Slefendorfas then gained possession and tried to score before being called offside, then George McHeileh almost scored only for Richmond’s Christian Ross to deny him with a last ditch challenge before the ball could cross the line.

Richmond bounced back almost immediately through Josh Knight, only for his shot to come back off the post.

At 82 minutes the stalemate was finally broken with Flynn’s spectacular volley flying past an outstretched D’Oria to give the visitors the win, and send Richmond back to Melbourne with three points.
