Hume jumps to second after 2-0 win at Thunder

Hume City has jumped to second spot on the PlayStation NPL Victoria 2015 table after a 2-0 victory over Dandenong Thunder on Sunday afternoon.

Second half goals from Marcus Schroen and substitute Deng Aguek propelled the visitors to victory in front of a healthy crowd at George Andrews Reserve.

Louie Acevski’s men held the better of possession and chances in the first half but could not make an impression on the scoreboard as both sides entered the break without reward.

City adopted a more direct route to goal in the first half with skipper Nick Hegarty providing some elegant deliveries inside the penalty area.

Jai Ingham delighted the crowd early on, firing his powerful effort from range just over the woodwork after cutting onto his right foot.

Thunder however almost caught its opponents off guard moments later barring a fantastic tackle from Ivan Pavlak to foil Ahmed Yusuf on the counter.

Hume almost capitalized with the lead on the break at the half hour mark.

Driving forward, Pavlak played to the feet of Calvin Mbarga on the edge of the area. The forward then provided a deft back heel to the feet of the on-running Schroen, only for Ramazan Tavsancioglu to intercept before the attacker could release a strike.

Stuart Munro’s side nonetheless came agonizingly close to the advantage just before the break.

A turnover at the back allowed Thunder skipper Alan Mulcahy time and space to shoot, hitting his powerful effort just wide of Chris Oldfield’s upright.

Upon the restart of play, Mbarga missed a golden opportunity.

A wayward clearance invited the forward to volley from inside the area, striking to the wrong side of the post.

Zaim Zenelli was forced into a fine save only a few minutes later as Hume piled on the pressure, eventually parrying a scramble inside the penalty area to safety.

A heavy collision between Petar Franjic and Ayodeji Omoboyne prior to the hour mark saw the defender flattened to the surface.

Veton Korcari then placed the disputed ball into the back of the net, only to have play bought back with concerns of a head injury to Franjic – who later returned to the field after receiving treatment.

A goal appeared inevitable for Hume and Mbarga struck closer with each opportunity and Hegarty’s deliveries were causing headaches for Thunder’s defence.

Hume made the breakthrough after 71 minutes.

Hegarty’s precise cross picked out Schroen’s head, gifting City the lead.

Number two soon followed as the momentum continued for Hume.

Ingham played through Aguek on goal, allowing the substitute to round the goalkeeper with a cool finish five minutes from time.

That victory sees Hume finish the week in second spot while Thunder is placed third from the bottom.
