Kingston breezes past Brunswick

By Jason Turner (@jaseangelo)

Kingston City has inflicted more pain on a young Brunswick City with a Stelios Konstantinidis hat-trick setting up a 4-0 victory on Monday night.

The final scoreline was arguably harsh on the bottom-placed Brunswick City as it managed to hold City to a single goal lead until a three-goal burst in the final 15 minutes.

In windy conditions at Grange Reserve, both sides came into the contest following losses in the previous round and it was Kingston City that settled early.

In a sign of what was to come, Max Etheridge found himself clear early but was well closed down by Brunswick’s keeper Mason Interlandi.

It wasn’t too long until Kingston opened up the scoring, with a long punt from keeper Nicholaus Woolward starting the move.

Making the most of Brunswick’s defence playing a high line, John Maclean was able to cross into Konstantinidis, whose deflected volley opening the scoring in the 5th minutes.

With the early buffer, the hosts played on the counter and exploited the pace of Konstantinidis and Etheridge.

Brunswick managed to draw a couple of saves from Woolward, and at the other end, Gino Defeo’s effective holding up of the ball wasn’t converted into any clear chances.

Fortunately for the visitors they held out Kingston right up to the half time break.

After the break, it was much of the same, scrappy attacks from Brunswick, and Kingston were happy enough to exploit the visitors' high defensive line.

Neither side put the other keeper under much pressure, as the lack of urgency from both sides knocked much of the excitement out of the game.

It wasn’t until the 77th minute until Kingston extended its lead after Konstantinidis latched onto the end a lofted through ball which he steered home.

The goal drained any small hint of resistance in the struggling Brunswick side.

John Maclean added his name to scoresheet minutes later, forcing a defender of the ball, he worked his way into the area and steered his shot home.

The rout was completed when Konstantinidis completed his hat-trick with the last kick of the game, getting onto the end of a loose ball in a congested penalty area.

Kingston City coach Nick Tolios was pleased with his side’s performance, as his side aim to finish of the season strongly.

“I thought they did well, we changed the line-up a fair bit, we got some younger boys fighting into the squad. We gave them a chance tonight and they did well,” Tolios said.

“It’s been a good first year in the NPL, it’s been a big learning experience for everyone. It will be interesting, a lot of players fighting for their spots next year.”

Newly appointed Brunswick City coach Armando Pianese was pleased with his side considering he has only had two weeks to work with the side.

“I was pretty pleased with the way we played until we copped the second goal, obviously two-nil down with 20 minutes to go we have to push forward,” Pianese said.
