Melbourne Knights bounced back from a 6-1 defeat against Heidelberg United to secure their first victory of the season, defeating a winless Northcote City 2-1 on Friday night.

Stipo Andrijasevic and James McGarry did the damage early, helping the home side to an early 2-0 lead, before Jonathan Bounas scored from the spot to make it an anxious finish for the hosts.

The Knights were threatening early from set pieces and it took just 15 minutes to register the first goal when Stipo Andrijasevic nodded home James McGarry’s free kick after Jacob Colosimo was felled on the edge of the area.

It was mostly one way traffic and could have been another to the Knights.

McGarry’s run into the box ended with a backheel to Hicks, whose shot was well saved by Petrovski.

The two combined again to double the lead in the 34th minute, with the former playing the latter through on goal, who made no mistake in dinking the ball over the keeper.

Northcote finally had an effort to peg a goal back when good play down the left wing saw Michael Cunningham cross it in for Aron Handakas, but his volley bounced wide of the mark.

The visitors were slowly finding their feet and Anthony Rizk forced debutant Fraser Chalmers into a solid save.

Northcote raced out of the blocks after the break, and it was half-time substitute Todd Dekker who made the difference, winning a penalty after being taken down in the box, with Bounas making no mistake from the spot.

The Knights re-grouped and a flurry of chances saw them almost restore a two-goal advantage, with a powerful effort by McGarry deflected out, before a Milan Batur header was cleared off the line.

A nervous ending to the contest saw Dekker get in behind the defence and appeal for a penalty after a challenge in the box, but the referee waved play on and the hosts eventually held on for a vital victory.

A rampant South Melbourne made it three straight wins and 12 unanswered goals with a professional away performance against Port Melbourne Sharks. It was looking ominous early when Iqi Jawadi netted a rocket after just six minutes, leaving in-form keeper Stjepan Gal no chance in goals. Luke Adams doubled the lead soon after, finishing off Nick Epifano’s pinpoint cross. While both sides exchanged opportunities in the second period, the scoreline remained unchanged to secure South’s 2-0 win.

Following a scoreless first half, the contest between two sides looking for their first win in 2016 exploded in the second with four goals and a red card. Oakleigh looked like being on their way to victory with a goal straight after the restart to Dimi Hatzimouratis, before Dusan Bosnjak capitalised on some sloppy defensive work to double the lead a minute later. Hamlet Armenian pegged one back with less than half an hour remaining following a horror mix up at the back, and a red card to Cannons substitute Perry Lambropoulos in the 75th - just two minutes after coming on - minute allowed the visitors to pile on the pressure and equalise in added time via Alex Caniglia.

Following this result, both teams sit on four points after three games with a win, draw and defeat each. While Bulleen had to weather an early storm in the first period, Will Abbott helped his side pip the lead by pouncing on a loose ball in the box. Victory kept pushing and the equaliser came with 15 minutes to go via George Howard, who tapped home Sebastian Pasquali's initial shot which rebounded off the woodwork. Last week’s hero Sami Nour was denied from point blank range late, as both sides settled for a point each.

Green Gully kick-started their season with a win over Avondale, who are still looking for their first points of the season. Prolific scorer Liam Boland got proceedings going with a neat finish when the visitors couldn’t clear their lines following a Tomas Murphy long throw-in. Nick Krousoratis and Roddy Vargas added two more in as many minutes in the second half, the former latching onto a long pass from midfield, while the evergreen latter tapped in at the back post from Yohei Iwasaki’s delivery.

This clash between two of the competition’s usual entertainers ended in a cagey stalemate. Theo Markelis and Kym Harris had early chances for the hosts saved by Ryan Scott. The visitors had the ball in the back of the net twice throughout the game via Chris Lucas and Wayne Wallace, but both goals were chalked off for offside in the build-up

Heidelberg made it two on trot to instill some momentum to their season, at the same bringing the high-flying Pascoe Vale down to Earth. It was Reuben Way who scored the winner just before half time, as Paco’s back four couldn’t deal with Kenny Athiu’s stinging shot, with Way pouncing in the box. The Bergers defence then stood tall against the surprisingly lacklustre visitors, claiming a vital three points.

New year, new club, same Taryne Boudreau. The Canadian who dominated the Sportsmart WPL and Team App Cup in 2015 started from where she left off with a double and early contender for goal of the season.

Boudreau's pefectly weighted lob from the top of the box in the 51st minute ended any hope of a Bayside comeback on a night where forwards were quiet and shots from midfield were not threatening.

American Jamie Pollock ran through the Bayside defence to score the second goal. Bayside occasionally threatened through Emily Harbis but largely lacked an attacking presence.

Alamein dominated the early proceedings with the assistance of  a considerable wind at Keilor Park Recreation Reserve, but faltered after conceding against the run of play.

Enza Barilla swept onto a long ball and cut across the area to an unmarked Marie Rampal to open the scoring. Alamein continued to create chances but American Hannah Keane couldn't find a way past Calder goalkeeper Bethany Mason-Jones.

Rachel Alsonso gave Calder a safety net from the penalty spot early in the second half after a foul on Aliesha Newman.

A stellar debut from Box Hill United goalkeeper Emily Shields kept Southern United at bay and allowed Ellen Wines to poach a late winner for the home side.

Two-time Sportsmart WPL gold medalist Tiff Eliadis had given Southern a first-half lead before Box Hill coach Bobby McGuinness rung the changes to turn the momentum and engineer the comeback.

Jess Tay's goal mid-way through the first half was enough to give Geelong Galaxy United the points in the club's first home game at Banyul Warri Reserve in Torquay.

A physical game, affected by the wind, the odd goal was enough for Geelong to hold off Heidelberg United's best efforts.

Brunswick City earned their first NPL2 East win this season as they steamrolled past a defiant, yet ultimately impotent Nunawading City outfit on Saturday afternoon at Dustan Reserve, leaving the visitors rooted to the foot of the table.

A brace from Adam Wright, scoresheet contributions from Michael Ndjemkompte, Jason Principato along with a second half own goal from David Antequera capped off a frustrating day at the office for Nunawading.

A match which probably didn't reflect the one sided scoreline; Nunawading mounted the majority of attacks in the opening quarter of an hour. They were made to rue their missed opportunities as a free kick from former Clifton Hill forward Adam Wright flew into the top corner on 30 minutes.

Despite the setback, Nunawading still maintained a solid performance after their first half concession in a match which ebbed and flowed for the remainder of the first, and start of the second half.

After mounting pressure from the home side, the floodgates opened after a header from Ndjemkompte looped into the net on the 69th minute and a crumbling Nunawading went on to concede three goals in the final 15 minutes in the form of a Principato tap-in, a David Antequera own goal, and final minute penalty conversion from Wright.

Box Hill moved into the top three after a 2-0 away win against Eastern Lions on Saturday afternoon. Lucas Johns put the visitors ahead after 27 minutes as Lions’ keeper Andrew Lightfoot was caught in no man’s land, allowing Johns to flick the ball beyond the custodian and finish off his own rebound off the post.

Johns added a second mid way through the second half as a pin-point cross from Patrick Thiakane found the striker streaming into the six-yard box for a tap in putting the game beyond the home side.

Dandenong Thunder maintain their perfect start to the NPL2 East season as they saw off a lethargic Murray United on Saturday night.

A first half goal from Amir Osmancevic put the hosts in the driving seat following a quick break. Despite withstanding incessant Thunder pressure for a large portion of the match, two goals in two minutes, first from Osmancevic and then Veton Korcari laid any hopes of a dramatic comeback to rest.

The only blight from a Dandenong perspective was their first concession of the season as former Thunder forward Zac Walker slotted coolly slotted the ball past Fraser Maclaren for little more than a consolation goal.

An 89th minute goal from Kristian Sarkies proved a fitting conclusion to a long night for the visitors at George Andrews Reserve.

GV Suns 0 Dandenong City SC 3 (Halil 7' Freddi 31' Antoniadis 54') | U20: 3-1

Dandenong City will be making the long trip back home with their first win of the season under their belts as they ran out 3-0 winners over Goulburn Valley on Saturday afternoon. An early goal from Halil Gur put the visitors ahead early on, leaving the suns on the back foot; a position from which they never recovered. Additional goals from Gonzalo Freddi and Chris Antoniadis rounded out a sound performance from City.

Kingston City FC 3 (Koukal 9' Iaconis 17' Mitrovic pen 57') Springvale White Eagles FC 0

Early goals set up Kingston's third consecutive win of the season as the promotion contenders continued their flying start. Zdenek Koukal's introduction to Australia continues to yield a goal-per-game while Velibor Mitrovic put his Round 1 penalty miss behind him to bury a second-half spot kick and ensure he also maintained his record of scoring in every game so far.

Sunshine’s Juso Julardzija, who had scored four goals in the first two rounds for the Georgies, lucked out in this clash, succumbing to a 13th minute red card. Whittlesea took full advantage, netting three times in the first half to seal the 3-0 result. In-form striker Atilla Ofli bagged a brace to take his tally to five goals from three games, while Steven Baricevic also found himself on the scoresheet.

Melbourne City triumphed in a high scoring encounter, learning last week’s lesson after being unable to put away a 10-man Whittlesea. Austin Wong tapped in from Daniel Zilic’s double save, before Stefan Zinni doubled the lead moments later as the hosts assumed control in the first half. Chris Cristaldo added the team’s third with a powerful effort, with Matt Townley pegging one back from the penalty spot. It was 4-1 following Cristaldo’s brace, and while Michael Anderson brought the deficit back to two, Marafioti capped off proceedings with a header from Cristaldo’s cross.

Bendigo City FC 0 Moreland City Football Club 3 (Ukuno 3' 47' Rixon 76') | U20: 3-0

Moreland City secured their first win of the season while condemning Bendigo to a third straight defeat without a goal scored. New man Apai Ukono continued his rich scoring form, netting from the get-go and just after half-time to take his season tally to five goals in three games. Trent Rixon also added his first strike of the season, killing off the contest in the 76th minute.

St Albans triumphed in an entertaining encounter against Ballarat Red Devils at Churchill Reserve.

The first shot in anger came from Joey Monek, who followed his clever switch to Josh Knight, but skied the latter’s cutback high over the bar.

It was a lapse of concentration at the other which led to Ballarat’s 14th minute lead, when Michael Trigger’s low cross evaded everybody and found youngster Brandon Lauton unmarked at the back post for an easy finish.

The Saints switched back on and responded in the 19th minute through Joey Monek, who combined with Barry Devlin up front to slide the ball past Aaron Romein in goals.

It was two for the hosts when the ball bobbled around in the box from Milicevic’s corner, with Knight bundling home from point blank range.

It really should have been three when Milicevic burst through after picking off Josh Romein’s pass in the Devils’ backline, but his one-on-one effort with the keeper was saved by the latter.

The frenetic opening half continued minutes later when Dominic Swinton was needlessly bundled over in the box, handing the visitors an opportunity to get back in the contest, and Shaun Romein made no mistake from the spot.

The advantage fell back the way of the hosts through more poor defending, as Barry Devlin was not properly marked in the box and easily picked off Knight’s cross just after half an hour.

With the game settling into a lull thereafter, Ballarat had a golden chance to restore parity once more just after the break when Shaun Romein delivered in a diagonal ball towards the back post, but Launton’s header was mistimed and didn’t threaten Baird.

Monek almost doubled both his tally and Albans’ lead when he burst through the middle, beating the ‘keeper but striking the post.

With the game entering the latter stages and Ballarat pushing forward, it was a long kick-out by Baird that had his opposite number rushing out of the box to clear it, and with the ball sent into the box with the keeper out of position, Yabio pounced to apply the finishing touches to the hosts’ win.

Werribee City FC 1 (Cassano 90+2') Moreland Zebras FC 2 (Kolman 24' Papadimitriou 59') | U20: 1-3

Moreland Zebras bounced back from a disappointing loss at home against St Albans last week to inflict another defeat on Werribee City. Nejc Kolman eased the visitors’ nerves in the 24th minute with the opening goal. It took until the 59th minute for the Zebras to add to the scoresheet via prolific scorer James Papadimitrou, while substitute Vani Shamoon sealed the three points soon after. It wasn’t until extra time that the hosts earned a consolation through Julian Cassano.
