Dandy City claim bragging rights in Eastern derby

BY DAMIR KULAS

Dandenong City produced a dominant second-half performance to overcome rivals Springvale White Eagles 3-0 at Frank Holohan Soccer Complex on Saturday afternoon.

Keegan Ziada proved to be Sprinvale's nemesis on the day as the diminutive winger set up both of Ashley Cattermole’s goals before the provider got himself on the scoresheet with an excellent individual goal.

The warning signs were there early on as a spill by White Eagles' Jeremy Sandoval saw the ball break free to Ziada only to see the goalkeeper redeem himself by making a good save.

Former Springvale attacker Andy Jerez was next to try his luck but his run into the box culminating in the former Joeys youth international launching a half-volley which sailed over the bar.

Ziada then once again tested out Sandoval in goals as he smartly turned his man before forcing the visiting shot-stopper into making a sharp stop down low.

Aaron Healey’s men continued to their efforts in front of goal with Cattermole twisting and turning inside the box before seeing his strike go in between Sandoval’s legs only to it bounce back generously into the arms of the young goalkeeper.

Centre-back Chris Ross was next to test the resolve of Sandoval as the ex-St. Albans defender launched a stinging volley which was well saved by the spawning custodian.

However the game’s best chance fell to the visitors against the run of play when a defensive mistake at the back for City saw Ricardo Teixeira presented with the perfect opportunity to open the scoring only to see his shot go wide.

That miss would prove costly as immediately after the resumption of play from the half-time break, Dandenong City broke the deadlock when Ziada’s cross from the right was tapped home by Cattermole for an early second-half lead for the hosts.

Zed Mihajlovic’s men almost grabbed an equaliser minutes later when teenage substitute Brandon Jansz outpaced John Carroll before seeing his shot well saved by the resilient Damir Salcin.

White Eagles skipper Dejan Erakovic flashed a shot in anger but a slight deflection from a City defender saw it go out wide for a corner.

The game was then all but sealed within three minutes mid-way through the half when Ziada once more saw his inviting cross into the box met by the feet of Cattermole who slotted home for his second.

Minutes later Ziada then sensationally turned his marker on the half-way line before stroking forward and calmly finishing past a stranded Sandoval to cap of a fantastic individual performance from the speedstar.

Centre-back Jordan Ballerini almost provided Springvale with a consolation late on but his bamboozling run from defence and into the box forced Salcin into making another save in order to keep the clean sheet intact as City ensured a repeat of the two sides 3-0 scoreline from earlier in the season.
