Flynn in form as Richmond sinks Murray with big win

By JAMES MANTON

Liam Flynn was the architect of Richmond's 3-0 win on Sunday afternoon, as it dismantled a hapless Murray United at Kevin Bartlett Reserve.

Flynn had a hand in all three of the home side's goals as he scored two and set up the third with a free-kick.

The Richmond number 11 nearly opened the scoring just minutes into the match, as his deep cross evaded Josh Fluss but smacked into the crossbar.

Samuel Catherine came close to netting the first goal, as he had a clear header from a corner but it went wide.

Chances were few and far between in the first half; tensions rose as Richmond missed another easy header - this time from Joshua Valadon.

But the deadlock was finally broken when Flynn was put through on goal by Michael Catalano, with Flynn classily lifting the ball over the on-rushing Fluss to give Richmond the lead.

The crowd didn't have to wait as long for the next though, as Flynn was once again put through clean on goal, and in a carbon copy of his first he doubled his tally for the match.

The second half began much like the first with few chances at either end, which made another missed header - this time from Richmond’s Matthew Waters - all the more frustrating.

Catalano should have buried the game midway through the half after some wonderful build-up play via Flynn and Joshua Knight left him one-on-one with the keeper, but he pushed his shot just wide of goal.

It took almost two-thirds of the match for United to have its first shot at goal, but it was in vain as Zac Walker's half-volley from a corner was skied well over the bar.

Flynn had a number of opportunities to finish his hattrick, missing an open goal and having a shot from inside the box saved within a matter of minutes.

But the final nail in the coffin came in the form of a free-kick from Flynn, as Valadon managed to get a flick-on in the back of the net to give Richmond its third and seal the win with five minutes to go.
