Richmond has no answer to Suns' six

By Matthew McNamara

Goulburn Valley Suns has stamped its authority on the PlayStation 4 NPL 1 East with a 6-0 thrashing of Richmond at McEwan Reserve on Saturday evening.

Englishman Craig Carley will take much of the credit, as his hat trick and man of the match display helped the Suns to record an emphatic victory.

The Suns were dominant from the outset, looking to counter attack whenever possible and took the lead early when in only the ninth minute Adam Scott slipped in Carley who rounded Richmond ‘keeper Christian Rossi to give the home side the lead.

Moments later that lead was doubled when Suns custodian Phil Petrovski’s long ball fell into the path of Sean Ellis who also rounded Rossi before tapping into an empty net.

Richmond would probably have felt aggrieved with the scoreline as they seemed to have the balance of play but couldn’t break down a structured Goulburn Valley outfit and trailed 2-0 at the break.

An hour into the game and Carley had his second when a Richmond corner broke down; Scott raced clear with the ball before playing in Carley who made no mistake making it 3-0.

Within a minute the Suns had another and the match as a contest was effectively over. This time, Scott turned scorer, neatly cutting in from the left hand side to slip the ball past the hapless Rossi.

The Suns weren’t done there.

Carley secured his hat trick with just left 17 minutes to play, but the lead up to the goal had the away side fuming as they believed Carley was offside.

Andrew Goff received what appeared to be his second caution from the match official however there was no mandatory red card shown.

Ellis completed the rout with just twelve minutes to go, scoring his second of the game from the penalty spot to land the home side their biggest ever win in the NPL.
