NT Sailing Youth Cup

Gary Martin 9 October 2017

The 2017 Nautical Supplies, Northern Territory Sailing Youth Cup (NTSYC) is Yachting NT’s series for Junior and Youth classes. This series is based on the same concept as the World Sailing Cup but specifically for junior and youth sailors, to build fleet numbers and racing experience at the Darwin Sailing Club.

The series is comprised of seven established Darwin Sailing Club events that many sailors already compete in. Using the results of those events a high score points system will be applied to calculate Nautical Supplies NTSYC winners in each class. The classes for the series are29er, Laser, Minnow.

There is no entry fee and no need to register for the series; Yachting NT will obtain the results from each of the nominated events from the Darwin Sailing Club to score the series.

The top 5 boats in each class event will only receive points. For example first will be scored 5 points, second 4, etc.…and fifth 1 point. A boat finishing in sixth place or worse is scored zero.

The winners of Nautical Supplies NTSC will be announced at the Darwin Sailing Club Presentation night in November 2017, where prizes will be presented. 2017 YouthSail and Junior Sail Success

Gary Martin 9 October 2017

YNT conducted it annual YouthSail and Junior Sail programs in October 2017. Due to the pending change in school holiday schedule and the need to provide end of season training to prepare NT sailors for the upcoming National Championship events, YouthSail and Junior Sail were run from 2 to 5 October 2017. The events were organised through Australian Sailing, overseen by YNT and utilised the Darwin Sailing Club facilities.

2017 saw one of Darwin’s well-known sailors, Mark Edmonds, provide high level coaching for the nine YouthSail participants in Lasers and 29ers. Mark is a local sailor who grew up in Darwin sailing at the Darwin Sailing Club in Minnows and Lasers, before moving to Sydney where he runs individual coaching clinics at the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club. Mark is also a valued crew in high level yachting events and successfully manages a number of racing yachts. Mark is a well accomplished sailor and was happy to have the opportunity to return to Darwin and share his knowledge with local sailors.

Junior Sail 2017 was coached by John Lynch a talented young Darwin sailor who is always willing to assist young sailors and spends a lot of his time coaching Minnow sailors. John is also a skipper in the NT Match Racing Team and, along with other Darwin sailors, spends time training and competing in National Match Racing Championships. Junior Sail consisted of seven Minnow sailors who were keen to participate and hone their skills in preparation for the Minnow Nationals in WA at the end of the year.

YouthSail and Junior Sail are annual events conducted by YNT play a vital role in giving young sailors the opportunity to work under the direction of high level coaches. YNT would like to thank the Darwin Sailing Club for its support and the Waterfront Bistro for providing healthy affordable lunches for the YouthSail participants.
