Special Olympics World Games

by Bronwyn Ibbotson

On the 21st July to the 18th August Allister Peek and Bronwyn Ibbotson represented Australia in the Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles, USA. We competed in sailing in a laser 4.7, Allister won the gold medal with Bronwyn close behind with the silver medal. Conditions were generally light in the mornings with the wind increasing in the afternoons. The competition was held at Belmont Pier, which is quite a long pier.

Allister and Bronwyn sailed in level 5 (solo). The other Aussies sailed in level 3 and Level 2. All the Sailors from Australia won medals in their level and a lot of sailors from different countries including USA, Netherlands, Finland, Russia and Greece. There were many volunteers who helped with the rigging and derigging at the pier.

It was good competition and we had time to visit many of the sites around Los Angeles and enjoyed meeting a lot of people from different countries.
