Queensland States decided
The final Hansa Class State Championship for the 2016/17 season has concluded on the Gold Coast.
The regatta was held at Varsity Lakes - the host of the 2016 Australian National Championships on April 1st and 2nd.
Sailing went ahead in the wake of Cyclone Debbie which passed the day before. Thankfully flooding, tide, and debris were not a problem. Lake Orr is partially sheltered so the program went ahead on schedule with advisory warnings to sailors about the remaining strong southerly winds. The weather did have an effect on one competitor - NSW's Allan Jones who was forced to turn back due to flood waters and therefore didn't make the event.
Saturday saw some exciting racing with all three races being completed in each class except the 303 Doubles. Sunday's wind conditions were even more challenging especially in the afternoon with the 2.3's only completing one additional race making their total four. The 303 Doubles completed five races in total, and the 303 Singles completed the full program of six races.
The stars of the regatta were Chelseann and her younger brother Domenick Osborne from Townsville who blitzed the 303 Doubles, with Barry Coates and Belinda the tail enders but really enjoying the outing in the red boat.
Chelseann was awarded the Golden Egg prize for the regatta and she and Domenick will now fly the flag for Queensland in the Asia Pacific Championships. They will team up to sail in the 303 doubles and Chelseann will also sail solo in the Hansa 2.3.
