RANSA Regatta 2018 Photos & Overview

by Roger & Dave

The annual RANSA Regatta was held Sunday 18th February on a glorious sunny day with strong North Easterlies.

RANSA Flag officers joined Commodores from other Clubs, sponsors and guests on board the Sydney Heritage Fleet’s magnificent LADY HOPETOUN to watch the start and follow the race. During the cruise visitors were informed of the RANSA Regatta being an Inter-Club challenge for the Admirals trophy. All club representatives were appreciative of the day and promised to give RANSA a serious challenge for the Admirals Trophy in 2019.

There were 74 entries – the best fleet for some years, and 69 boats started in a downwind start which is a change of tactics for most RANSA yachts.

PRO Robyn Morton sent the fleet off on a count up start from 11am, and all divisions ran the full course.

There was a pleasing number of entries from other harbour Clubs, most notably from the SASC. They made a great effort to field competitors in as many divisions as possible in order to be in contention for the Admirals Trophy inter club competition.

In the event SASC boats won the Classic Division with VANITY just 24 seconds ahead of FIDELIS, and Non Spin Div 6 with BORDEAUX, but not enough to wrest the trophy from RANSA who had the winners in Divisions 2-MR MOJO, 3- SILKY and 4 -CAPRICCIO, along with two thirds and a second.

Other winners were DUENDE (CYCA) in Div 1 and SAHARA (RPEYC) in Div 7.

Sadly, the Couta boat Eloise was swamped and sank rapidly off Bradleys Head, but quick action by SINE WAVE ensured that the crew were rescued safely. Thanks also to SHAMBLES and JAZZFOLK who stood by, as did the RSYS RIB which was out for the Etchells State championships. The owners are pleased to report that Eloise is now back on her mooring with only water damage to the engine and electrics.

PRO Robyn sought redress for SINEWAVE for her efforts, and Sinewave was duly granted 4th place in her division.

A good crowd gathered back at the Clubhouse to enjoy food and good company in the sunshine to the music of the Dew Cats.

Commodore Dave Giddings thanked all of the competitors for their participation, the sponsors for the raffle prizes, the race management team for their great work on the water and the house committee for looking after the clubhouse and the bar – all vital elements for a successful day.

The results were read out and prizes awarded to the first 3 place getters in each division – full results are on the website here – click on Recent Races/RANSA Regatta.

The Admirals Trophy will be presented at the RANSA Annual Prizegiving in April - the results were as follows:

RANSA 8 points, SASC 16, CYCA   20, RPEYC 26

The raffle was very successful, and all proceeds from the raffle and race entry fees go to our favoured charity – the Sir David Martin Foundation

Another great day at RANSA, and we look forward to an even bigger RANSA REGATTA 2019!
