SA Laser Metros a perfect warm-up for Laser Nationals

by salaser.com

The SA Laser Metropolitan Titles were held at Adelaide Sailing Club on the 3rd and 4th December and were a great warm-up for the upcoming Laser Nationals.

A good fleet of 17 boats entered the event, with most already entered into the Laser Nationals. The 7 races held over two days by PRO Malcolm Hughes and his team were perfect training for what to expect when the Australian Laser Championships descend on Adelaide Sailing Club.

Two races were held on Saturday with a 15-18 knot seabreeze and clear skies providing the perfect backdrop for some spectacular Laser sailing.

Sunday morning saw a passing front and warm, muggy conditions interspersed with rain showers and a tricky off-shore north to north-easterly breeze. The changes in pressure and direction kept all competitors on their toes in the short course racing format.

Alex (AJ) Newman took out the 4.7 rig division with a late run of heat wins to beat Josh Hinks by one pointwith Sarah Dredge third. The Radial division was won by Andrew Darcey with John Gordon beating Women's champion Sammy Homan into second on countback on the last race. Sean Homan turned back the clock in the Standard Rig division - winning the "Rose Bowl" trophy for the second time - some 20 years after winning it the first time!

All thoughts now turn to the Laser Nationals. If conditions are anything like the video below, we are in for a great regatta.
