East Coast Champs (TT1) a wrap..

by Chris Costandi

Whilst we may be in June and yes it is winter, there was a buzz of activity over the June long weekend at Georges River Sailing Club who played host to the 2017 NSWIODA East Coast Championships on it’s great sailing waters of Botany Bay. The event was proudly supported by NB Sailsports.

Close to 90 sailors from 3 classes (including Optimist, and invited classes 420’s and Laser 4.7’s/Radials) converged on GRSC for the 2 day regatta.

Day 1 saw some great racing on the bay in the afternoon with good consistent breeze early on from the SSE at 12 knots and then easing a little before the last race of the day. The Optimist fleet managed to get 3 races completed before Jeremy Atkinson (RO) wrapped it up for the day, whilst the Lasers and 420’s were able to squeeze in a 4th race to finish their day. Meanwhile the Optimist Green Fleet under the guidance and expertise of Green Fleet Coach Connor Campbell had an awesome time all of their own with some great beach games and then 6 good races right out the front of the club. Lot’s of smiling and happy faces and a big shout out to Connor for making that happen!

Day 2 unfortunately did not play out as we would have hoped for with very light to no wind at all on the Bay. Sailors launched in the hope that it would fill in, and despite being patient for some time, and a couple of attempted starts, no such luck with Jeremy sending all sailors back to shore by early afternoon. That’s sailing as they say, but at least everyone was able to get away a little earlier and enjoy the rest of their long weekend.

GRSC wishes to thank all the volunteers who helped put this regatta together and in running the event and to all sailors for their attendance and participation in racing.
