OptiChicks and Travellers Trophy Weekend Updates!

by Melissa Williams-Brown

From HHSC Headquarters:

Excitement is building ahead of possibly the largest gathering of super fast, super fun OptiChicks ever seen in Australia, this weekend! 34 (and counting) young sailors have signed up and are ready to go for a day, night and overnight of sailing fun, adventures, friend building and learning, all in the picturesque Inner West Harbour waters of Hunters Hill Sailing Club!! Our young sailors will be treated to a day of working in teams, some great selfie moments, a visit to the marine and hot chocolate shop on Cockatoo Island, Sydney Harbour, a twilight yacht cruise and then a beautiful dinner at which they will be joined by a host of Olympic and Paralympic athletes for a Q&A session about training, challenges, competition and life as an elite athlete, including how to balance school, friends and family in chasing a dream! Spots are still available, but filling fast, and you can book via the NSWIODA website!! ( http://www.trybooking.com/Booking/BookingEventSummary.aspx… )

We are incredibly grateful to have Liesl Tesch AM, Angela Farrell and Helen Denman in attendance to talk to us about their experience at the highest levels of sailing, basketball and swimming, as well as share genuine conversations with the OptiChicks. They will joined by emerging young coaches (and sailors) Caitlin Jeffries and Isabella Shields over the course of the sailing day and dinner.

The event is generously sponsored by Saltwater Insurance Consultants, Piquant Catering and, importantly, many members of the Hunters Hill Sailing Club, who have generously donated their time, yachts and Saturday night sleep to support these young athletes in a safe, facilitative and fun environment. We are also extremely thankful for the support shown by Phil McGrath and the team at Cockatoo Island Marine Centre , for allowing us docking access to the the Island!!

Stay tuned for live updates throughout the event!!

Travellers Trophy Info:

TT4 Update from Hunters Hill Sailing Club

As the weather has become warmer, and the breeze forecast to be solid, registrations have been flying in for this Sunday’s fourth and final round of the NSW / ACT Travellers Trophy Regatta. At last count, we were into the 90’s, and expect to go well over the 100 mark by the time the gun goes on Sunday morning! Each Fleet will complete 3 or 4 windward leeward races and then, in a departure from the usual format of Opti regattas, a marathon event - the fabled “Around the Islands Race” - taking in the waters off Hunters Hill Sailing Club, and performing a figure of 8 loop around Cockatoo Island and its world famous shipyards and cranes, Spectacle Island with its functioning Naval facilities, and Snapper Island with a slightly spooky tumbledown set of naval shacks. In navigating the course, our young sailors will be challenged by tides, wind shifts and shadows, and the distractions of sailing past some seriously interesting stuff!!

Needless to say an event of this magnitude wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of event sponsors and the members of the Hunters Hill Sailing Club, who are out in force running two courses and the on land components of the regatta.

Big thanks to our sponsors and supporters for this event:

Boat Crew Gear, who are providing some fantastic surprises for our Green Fleet competitors, as well as having their pop up store on site on Sunday morning - and if you order online before the weekend, they will bring your order along on Sunday for you to collect!

Coffee With Bite for being our coffee supporter - sure to find favour with the fleet of OptiParents;

Saltwater Insurance Consultants www.saltwaterinsurance.com - who don’t just have a catchy law firm name, but do spend most weeks immersed in sea spray chasing dinghies around the bay!

There is still room for more OptiKids to come and take on the challenge of the final round of the Travellers trophy series - you can book online at the NSWIODA website!
