Vaucluse Regatta and Sydney Harbour Championships Results 2012
The final two heats of the Sydney Harbour Championships for the 2012 season were run in conjunction with the 80th Anniversary of Vaucluse Yacht Club Regatta on Saturday 18th Feb 2012.
A beautiful, sparkling Sydney Harbour was the canvas for the event, splattered with a myriad of other craft on the water making the course a busy, and sometimes scary, place to race - just ask Bill who had to take extreme avoiding action not once, but twice to avoid being run over by seemingly oblivious port-tack yachts.
The south to south-easterly breeze of 8-12kn made for a challenging beat in both heats and Eddie O'Donnell picked about the best path through the puddles of breeze to lead the first race and maintain that lead to take the first heat from Mark Skelton and Tim Davies (who also earned a coveted Blue Swimmer for his efforts).
We had to wait a while for the large fleet of Lasers to complete their course before heat 2 started in similar conditions with Eddie once again able to divine his way through the shifts to round the top mark in a tight cluster with Tim, Mark and Gareth Wells. Through the remainder of the race this bunch remained tight with the lead changing several times and finishing within 58 seconds.
Taking advantage of the conditions several stayed for a final non-championship race and once again we thank the VYC for running a great days racing for us!
Tim Davies maintained his lead to take the overall Sydney Harbour Championship for this season with Eddie O'Donnell second and Mark Skelton third.
