Commodores Update
Night of Memories
Last night I hosted a very successful night for over 50 past members from the 1960's and early 70's.  The night explored the days of the Rainbow class which at one time had more that 50 boats competing.  Thank you to Peter Read who has been doing all the heavy lifting on this important piece of work.

Christmas Celebrations at SBSC
You are invited to the Sandy Bay Sailing Club Christmas drinks and nibbles on Saturday 13th December commencing at the end of the day’s sailing (4:30pm – 6:00pm).

For catering purposes please RSVP to Emma Hamilton by Thursday 11th December, or sooner if possible.

Father Christmas will hopefully be in attendance to distribute presents. Traditionally boat helms and crews provide a small gift for each other while someone (a parent) provides a small gift for solo sailors. Santa is also very happy to hand out presents to siblings who may be at the party. There will be a number of marked garbage bags in the canteen on the day of the Christmas Party to deposit gifts into.

Saturday Training: Be rigged and ready for briefing at 10:00 am
Sunday buoyancy and sail measurement: starts at 9:00 am

All cadets will be required to undertake their buoyancy test.
This is a compulsory annual requirement of the class and we will have many helpers there to assist those new to the class.

The buoyancy tests also coincides with measuring and stamping of new sails. Class measurer, Richard Goodfellow will be in attendance. Sail buttons will be available for cash purchase on the day.

Laser 4.7 - History of Lasers
Ironically, the Laser was not designed to be a racing boat. Ian Bruce asked friend Bruce Kirby to design a small sail boat that could be used for recreational purposes and transported easily on the roof of a car. Ian had a potential client interested in adding a sailboat to his product line. That deal fell through, but ultimately led Ian, Bruce, and sail designer Hans Fogh to fully develop, build and market the boat. Their formula was perfectly timed and executed, as the Baby Boom generation was ripe for an affordable one-design boat that could be raced or sailed just for fun. They first called the boat the “Weekender” with a “TGIF” logo on the sail. However, during development someone suggested the boat needed a more scientific sounding name. Ian replied, “you mean something like Laser?” Bruce liked it; the rest is history.

The Laser 4.7 class commenced this season out of SBSC and they have enjoyed a fleet of 5 boats. Training is Thursday nights and Saturday mornings. Ben Reid is off to the Australian Youth Nationals in WA so we would like to wish him all the best. If you are interested in Laser sailing for next season or would like to try one out, just ask the kids and go for a sail!
