COMMODORE'S MESSAGE

With only several weeks to go the run down to the club pennant series is hotting up with the new format producing some close results with only several points separating 1st and 2nd in most classes for both the DSS and SBSC Pennant series.

Congratulations to Sam Tiedemann and Will Connor for taking out the inaugural 29er STate Titles last weekend convincingly with 6 wins from 10 races sailed.  It was great to see 7 boats out for a new class and the skill showed after such a short time.

The annual prize giving and AGM date has now been set for 24 May at the club.  Block your diaries out as this is always a great night for the whole family.

SUPPORT HUGO HAMILTON TO ACHIEVE HIS DREAM

In January this year SBSC member Hugo Hamilton finished 4th at the Australian Optimist National Championships.  This result gave him a place in AOST (the Australian Optimist Sailing Team – the top 25 place getters) for the second time.  This year, as one of the top 5 qualifiers, he will compete at the 2014 World Championships in Argentina, the first Tasmanian ever to participate in an Optimist World Championship. It is a very competitive regatta with over 250 junior sailors from 110 countries, and I will be spending a lot of time training and travelling in preparation.  Yachting Australia provides some funding towards coaching but travel, accommodation, and boat hire costs are self-funded.

To assist Hugo to raise money to help fund some of the costs involved in this year of sailing he is going to do a sponsored sail, leaving from the Sandy Bay Sailing Club and sailing to the Iron Pot Lighthouse and back (approximately 22 Nautical Miles).
