Blinking Billy 27 August

The days are starting to get longer and just a little bit warmer and soon the season will under way, with activity levels at the club already starting to increase. There has been plenty of planning going on in the off-season and there will be some building works at the club over the next few weeks to replace the balustrade on the front of the club.

There are also several course running this September, with Mark Laying, First Aid, and Race Office Courses. SBSC has been awarded both the International Cadet Nationals in Dec 18/Jan 19 and the Australian Optimist Championships in Jan 2019, so now would be a good time for all of our volunteers to take the opportunity to update their knowledge and skills. Details on all of these courses and how to enrol are listed below.

I would also like to congratulate all the sailors who headed to overseas regattas during the winter, there were some excellent results achieved by all:

International Optimist European Championships
Oscar O'Donoghue - 56th

International Cadet Worlds
Jacob McConaghy & Sam Hooper - 7th Overall & 1st U16 Helm
Charlie Goodfellow & Lawrence Jeffs - 12th Overall & 1st U15 Helm
Archer Ibbott & Charlie Boman - 39th
Matilda O'Donoghue & Aya Gibson - 42nd

29er Worlds
Rupert Hamilton & Fynn Sprott - 57th
Will Seargent & Charlie Zeeman - 75th
Thomas Nikitaras & Rowan Langford - 85th

I would also like to congratulate SBSC members Alice Buchannan for her Yachting Tasmanian Award for Female Sailor of the Year, Brendan Crisp (with RYCT member Daniel Maree) for Outstanding Youth Achievement, and Greg Rowlings for administrator of the year award, a fantastic result for all.

Finally good luck to the two Friends teams and the Fahan team, who are travelling away for the teams racing inter-dominion in a few weeks time.

That's all for now, further updates to following in the coming weeks. see you all soon.

There are two other courses coming up in September that might interest club volunteers. Clubs with a nationals event on will find them particularly relevant.

  • 23 & 24 September         Race Officer – State and National (at RYCT)
  • 23 & 24 September         Judge – State and National (at RYCT)

The links to these two seminars are here: Small fee, includes a Zhik Australian Sailing Race Official long sleeve polo.
Although we strongly encourage those who complete the training course to go on and seek accreditation at State or National level, these courses are also very useful for volunteer officials operating at Club level.
Tackers 1 and Tackers 2 courses have been published and are open for registration.

Tackers 1 - YA Course - Tackers 1 - Having Fun (SBSC/DSS members)
Tackers 1 - Having Fun Holiday program (non-members)

 Lizzi's Corner
Welcome to the edge of Spring!  Now is a good time of year to do some of the following:

  • Pull your boat out, give it a clean!
  • Check over all lines, blocks and fittings
  • Check the top and bottom of the hull, especially along the gunnel and around bungs and portals
  • Check over blades for wiggly bits, cracks and rough spots
  • Check that you have all safety gear (e.g. bailor, paddle, bowline)
  • Check your sails / rigs: roll out on the carpet at home and check for holes, especially near batton pockets and corners (sail ties, if you have an Opti)
  • Find your sailing gear!  Remember Spring can be the coldest time of the year because we have the coldest water... do not be fooled by the sunshine... make sure beanies, booties and thermal layers are found and make it in your gear bag.
  • NOTE ON FIXING: it's important to check out your boat and note any issues - even if you do not know how to fix it.  There are plenty of knowledgeable folks at the club to lend a hand or point you in the best direction.

  • The club will be open on weekends from approx 10am-4pm. Stay tuned on Blinking Billy for dates and times.
  • Holiday programming is about to go live - if you are around in the Term 3 holidays there will be opportunities to sail for all sailors. Watch this space!

  • Spend some time thinking about the best moments of last season -
  • And the toughest.
  • What did you improve? How did you get stronger?
  • What were some of your greatest challenges?
  • What would you like to accomplish this sesaon?

See you on the water!

 1st Aid Course

With the support of Ian Cooksey from Marine Solutions Tasmania, SBSC is offering members the opportunity to gain an accredited first aid and resuscitation qualification.
This course will consist of two x three hour sessions held over two evenings. The course will include the use of the clubs resuscitation equipment and on-water trauma kits.
Thanks to Ian, we are able to offer the course and accreditation at a much reduced rate for club members, so don’t miss a great opportunity to gain or update your first aid qualification at a reduced rate.
For those who hold current first aid certificate, but wish to update their annual CPR certification, you are able to attend a single session on Friday, subject to availability. If the course is over-subscribed, then Ian may offer an additional CPR Recertification Session.

SBSC requires all junior instructors to hold a valid First Aid Certificate, and encourages all volunteers to sign up, particularly on-water volunteers.
