Blinking Billy 21st September 2016

Blinking Billy Newsletter - 21st September 2016

This Saturday marks the first week of racing at the club in 2016/17 season with the first of the trophy races. Club activities on this Saturday will commence late morning, with some sailors hitting the water for a morning sail, and racing for all classes and grommets training in the afternoon. The weather is looking fine with light breezes so a great day to get out on the water and dust off the winter cobwebs.
There will be a few less people around this weekend due to the inter-dominion teams sailing in New Zealand and I wish all of the crews, in particular SBSC members, from Friends School good luck and fair breezes.
As the season kicks off it is important to note that all parents are expected to assist with volunteering at the club, either in the canteen, on the water, or doing shore duties. Our club is one of the best junior sailing clubs in Australia due in part to our the strong volunteering culture.

Lots happening these holidays—

Registration for Sail & Play - still room in the second intake!  Sail & Play is the perfect program for those looking to get a taste and/or up their new sailing skills. Tell your non-sailing mates and siblings!

Cadet Spring Training - Weekend of the 1st & 2nd October.  Get on the water and shake out the Winter cobwebs on your boat handling and racing skills (and maybe even your rig!) Especially recommended for those sailors who are transitioning from crew to helm, or working with a new teammate this season. Lizzi will be leading this camp and looking forward to meeting as many Cadet sailors as possible!

TIODA Camp - Tues-Wed the 4th & 5th October
This training camp is open to all current TIODA members - so make sure you have paid your class fees! Training will be run by coaches Lizzi & Rohan, with guest appearance by Hugo Hamilton. An important focus of this camp will be RIG TUNING & BOAT PREP - making sure our boats and sailing skills are ready to go this season. All levels welcome.

29er Spring Training: - Thurs-Sat the 6th, 7th & 8th October
Three solid days of the triple threat - boathandling, boatspeed and tactical drills. Do not forget your notebooks for a bit of boat tuning theory - and why what works. BRING TOOLBOXES and 2 notebooks (1 rigging notebook per boat, 1 sailing notebook per sailor).

         Lizzi's Corner

To all the sailors and families at Sandy Bay - I am so excited to be part of the upcoming season. With Summer just around the corner, it’s time to get to work!

Please take a few minutes to fill out the sailor survey - this is a chance for me to get to know all the sailors on an individual level.  If your sailor is able - have them fill it out on their own - otherwise it is OK to fill it out with them (younger sailors) or for them (newer sailors).

Click on the Sailor Survey link below -

Note that all questions are optional, but being as thorough as you can is appreciated!

For all the girls - whether you’re at entry level or experienced, keep your eyes posted for the GIRLS CAMP to be announced in next week’s Blinking Billy. To assist registration please fill out the Sailor Survey now.

REGOS CLOSING for Mid-Week Coaching
Make sure to Rego for Hill Street Mid-Week Coaching if you plan on training after school this season.

Rego closes NEXT Friday, 30th September.

Note - Forms with completed AVAILABILITY will be given priority (one circle per day). Put your best foot forward and get the best results!

OPTIS - Please make sure you fill out whether you are Green, Intermediate or Open. If you are unsure, circle the two that best apply.

CADETS - Elliot is on board this season as the club coach heading the Cadets. Note: as the current Worlds team already has training scheduled, Mid-Week coaching will not have a Worlds-team only day, however, all Worlds team participants will have the option to train with Elliot. If availability is not fully completed, training sessions are not guaranteed!

LASERS - Keep up the great work!

29ERS - Pending interest we will have a mixed-level training session. Lookout for more announcements re training this season.

Please send all of your qualifications and/or describe your coaching and sailing experience, include your age, DOB and best contact phone & email to

This is to help the coaching team of Rohan, Elliot and myself to plan this season's coach-only sessions and season programming.

*Special Mention* to Meg G, Hugo H and Sam L for being the first ones in.

See you on the water sometime soon!

SBSC Volunteering Roster

The success of our club isn't just seen in the growth of our fleets.  Sandy Bay Sailing Club relies on the strong support of parents, carers and supporters who help not only on weekends but throughout the week.  The work never ends!

Please show your support by volunteering - If you have not already signed up, please approach any of our committee members or coaches to see how you can help. Rosters are being drafted now!

A special call for volunteers for our On Water - Rib Crews -  You just need a boat license and a spare few hours on a Saturday or Sunday.  It's a great way to watch on-water action and learn from many of our more experienced sailing families. Please contact Brendan Dywer for more information -

Sandy Bay Sailing Club is once again offering a Sail and Play Holiday Program during the school holidays. The program is held over two days and is for children aged 7-12 years who are able to swim confidently, interested in learning about boats, getting wet, sailing and being safe in and around the water.

Qualified instructors will be offering fun and educational activities that will allow children to experience being on the water in different types of boats and having a whole lot of fun! Numbers are limited and a full wetsuit is recommended. Sandy Bay Sailing Club will also run their Tackers 1 and 2 learn to sail programs this sailing season beginning at the end of October. These courses are very popular, so early registration is recommended. Tackers is a 20 hour course run on Saturday mornings and is an introducing to learning how to sail your own boat. Qualified instructors will provide informative and exciting activities that will develop sailing skills, while all importantly focusing on having fun around boats.

Dates – Sail and Play - 5th and 6th October

(Tackers - Saturday mornings beginning 22nd October)

Time - 9am-3pm

Venue – Sandy Bay Sailing Club

For registration for Sail and Play and Tackers please visit

Comment Guidelines: The SportsTG Network is made up of players, families and passionate sports followers like you who have a strong opinion about sport. That's great - we want you to have your say and share your thoughts with the world. However, we have a few rules that you must follow to keep it fun for all. Please don't be rude, abusive, swear or vilify others. Apart from some pretty serious sport sanctions, we also can ban you and report you if things get out of hand.
