Ref to officiate at Olympics

RAROTONGA, 26 June 2004: Cook Islands soccer may have not qualified for the Olympics, but a Cook Islander has been selected by the Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA) to officiate in Athens.

Cook Islands Football Association (CIFA) president Lee Harmon said Michael Mouauri will travel to Athens and officiate as an assistant referee in the soccer tournament.
"Mouauri should be proud of himself for being selected to officiate at the Olympic soccer tournament," Harmon said.
Harmon added Mouauri had internationally improved his ranking as an assistant referee in the last three years.

Already this year Mouauri has officiated in the Olympic qualifying group A matches held in Sydney, and the playoffs between Australia and New Zealand in late January on a home-and-away basis.

His latest assignment was officiating at the second stage of the World Cup Oceania qualifying tournament for Germany 2006 held in Adelaide, Australia earlier this month.

Mouauri together with Teariki Goodwin are the only Cook Islanders to date to officiate in a FIFA final competition. Australia will represent the Oceania region at the Olympics. - CIFA/UKM
