Eastern Suburbs Women remain undefeated in six matches after holding off Souths United Women’s second-half resurgence to draw 0-0 at Wakerley Park.

The visitors enjoyed the better of the first 45 minutes in the third-versus-second clash before holding firm after the restart to claim a fourth clean sheet of the season.

Souths have Bianca Warrener to thank for a string of early saves which prevented a second defeat of the campaign.

The draw means both teams lose ground on The Gap Women despite remaining in the top four.

Key Moments

45’ – CHANCE FOR EASTS – Emma Pittman shoots from distance but her shot is pushed away from the top right corner by Souths ‘keeper Bianca Warrener.

51’ – CHANCE FOR EASTS – Warrener is again needed to claw a Souths shot away from goal, this time keeping out Renee Cowan’s effort.

52’ – CHANCE FOR SOUTHS – Deeanna Thompson pierces Easts’ defence and rounds the onrushing Anastasia Mavrick but places her finish the wrong side of an empty net.

70’ – CHANCE FOR SOUTHS – Thompson dribbles down the right and squares a pass for Meaghan McElligott but the winger’s strike is held by Mavrick.

85’ – CHANCE FOR EASTS – Warrener pushes away Emma Pittman’s threatening free-kick from outside the penalty area.

What They Said

“At half-time I felt we were fortunate to come in at 0-0 – I thought Easts played really well. But the second half I thought we picked our game up a lot and in the end we could have snatched a win. I’m happy with a draw and I’m pretty sure Easts will feel the same.” – Gary French, Souths United FC Women coach.

“It was probably up there with one of the better performances we’ve had this year. We restricted a side that is scoring plenty of goals and is dangerous across the front line and midfield to less than a handful of shots. (The players) are looking at it as probably two points that got away from them based on the amount of chances created to score goals.” – Garrath McPherson, Eastern Suburbs FC Women coach.
