Sports Trainer Course - Level 1 Newcastle

BodyWorx Physio in Newcastle is once again hosting an accreditted Sports Medicine Australia Level 1 Sports Trainer course. This course. This is an excellent course for anyone involved with sports as an athlete, coach, manager, parent or club volunteer.

This course is being run on February 10th and 11th (Sat & Sun), 9am-5pm at our Junction clinics (78 Glebe Rd, The Junction).

The total cost for this nationally accredited course is $285, allows your to work and be paid  as a sports trainer and has a prerequisite of a WorkCover recognised senior first aid certificate.

The Level 1 Sports Trainers course is designed to introduce participants of the basic knowledge and skills required by a Sports Trainer. These skills include the management of specific sporting injuries, sports taping and transporting an injured athlete. This course educates prospective sports trainers, teachers, coaches, administrators and parents on the basic principles of sports medicine.

Sports trainers play a vital role in the prevention of injury. This course provides participants with the necessary skills to assist in improving athletic performance, making sport safer for all.

Prerequisites 

Course Content

The course covers the following units:

  • Sports Trainer in Action (roles and responsibilities, code of ethics, admin, record keeping, communication etc.)
  • Principles of Injury Management – includes practical session (Injury cycle, R.I.C.E.R. of hard and soft tissue injuries, approaching an injured athlete, management of incident, special injuries, soft tissue injuries, role in rehabilitation phase)
  • Structure & Function of the Musculo-Skeletal System (Anatomical terms, Skeletal system, joints, ligaments, muscular system, tendons, bursae, movement)
  • Warm-up, Cool down and stretching
  • Drugs in Sport
  • Common sporting illnesses & injuries (hard and soft tissue, overuse injuries)
  • Nutrition (eating for sports performance, carbohydrate, protein, fat, hydration, recovery, pre-event and recovery nutrition)
  • Heat & Cold illness (Regulating body temperature, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, heat stroke, affecting factors, weather conditions, clothing)
  • Common medical conditions affecting athletes (Shock, asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, heart related, viral, chronic, cardiovascular emergencies, chronic illness and injuries, spinal, brain and head, dental, chest and abdominal)
  • Moving an injured athlete – Patient transport (Methods, conscious horizontal and standing spinal injuries, transporting spinal injuries etc.)
  • Sports Taping (Materials, taping hand i.e. finger and thumb, taping of the ankle and ankle bracing) 

Assessment 

  • Taping of ankle and thumb
  • Practical scenario which may include slings, bandages, TOTAPS and moving an injured athlete
  • Multiple choice exam
  • Workbook (Filled in throughout the course) 

Certification

Successful completion of the Level 1 Sports Trainer course provides an opportunity for participants to become a SMA Nationally accredited Sports Trainer. This is the standard required to perform the duties of a sports trainer in most of Australia’s major sporting codes.
