Cardiff take out Reserve Grade Premiership
Reserve Grade Minor Premiers Cardiff, beaten by Killarney Vale in the Second Semi Final, extracted sweet revenge in the Reserve Grade Grand Final with a polished and convincing 24 point victory over the Bombers at Newcastle No.1 Oval. Final scores were Cardiff 10.10.70 to Killarney Vale 6.10.46.
The Hawks led at every change in a return to the dominant form they exhibited in the Home and Away season. Cardiff kept Killarney Vale to two first-half goals to set up their deserved victory.
Fleet-footed forward Aaron Wivell showed his class kicking five of Cardiff's ten goals, often running alone and unattended inside the 50m arc. Michael Broadbent was Killarney Vale's only multiple goalkicker with two majors.
300-gamer Nic Kocon, playing as a loose man in defence, was superb across half-back for the Hawks, time and again repelling the Bombers attacking raids.
Hawks ruckman Clinton James was adjudged best on ground as he and captain Tony Edser controlled the ruck contests all day. Cardiff's other good players were Kocon, Zac Moore, Jarrod Braybon, Brendan Wold and rover Tom Lashlie.
Killarney Vale were best served by Rob Zahra, Brendan Lewis (who moved onto the ball in the second half and produced an excellent performance), Adam Fiene, Broadbent, Peter Harvey and Justin Daley.
