Newcastle City - 2017 GE Women's Premiers

Newcastle City capped off a magnificent 2017 GE Women's season by claiming the premiership, to complete the undefeated season for Nathan Wilmott and his team. Final Scores: Newcastle City 10.11.77 to Nelson Bay 1.6.12.

The scoreboard certainly did not reflect the quality of the match with both signs showing plenty of skill and determination but in the end Newcastle City proved too strong.

The game   at a frenetic pace and it took seven minutes before Newcastle City captain Audrey Gillingham kicked the first goal of the game. Nelson Bay skipper, Lisa Steane kicked a long goal to respond for the Marlins, however unfortunately this was to be the only goal they kicked for the game.

Late goals to leading goalkicker, Meaghan MacDonald and Sarah Halvorsen saw the Minor Premiers lead by 10 points at the first change.

Newcastle City began to get on top in the middle of the ground with Best on Ground recipient , Erin White influential. Three goals for the quarter saw them open up a 29 point lead at the long break.

Even though they were trailing by almost five goals, Nelson Bay came out full of intent in the third quarter, and led by their guns, Pippa Smyth and Steane they matches their more fancied opponents but unfortunately this effort was not reflected on the scoreboard.

Tayla Braithwaite kicked the only goal for the term which took Newcastle City's lead to 40 points at the final change.

Three more goals in the final term saw Newcastle City eventually run out 59 point winners.

Best for the Premiers were White, Braithwaite, Paige Mathewson, Halvorsen, Madeline Smith and Gillingham with Taylah Smith, Ash Hallyar and Halvorsen each kicking two goals.

For Nelson Bay, Lauren Hughes was there best after doing an excellent defensive job on the dangerous Hallyar with Smyth, Steane, Sophie Balcombe, Lauren Cooper and Kate Holland also playing well.
