NEWS: GRFC Women’s Division One – Round 4 roundup

DRYSDALE SC has leapt to outright top spot on the GRFC Women’s Division 1 ladder following the completion of Round 4 action last weekend.

Star striker Serena Clapp, who was returning from injury, netted a brace and Catie Hodge scored one for Drysdale, while Rebecca Mcglinchey scored the only goal for the Coasters in the game which was played at Banyul Warri Reserve.

Over at Village Park in Barwon Heads, the home side was no match for a rapant Surfside Waves who racked up five goals without reply. Both Lili Woodward and Alexis Pearson scored doubles apiece, while Shauna Mcconnell chipped in with one goal to send the Waves skyrocketing into 4th spot on the ladder.

The round’s closest contest was fought out at Grovedale Reserve with the home side Barwon SC narrowly lowering its colours to the visiting Kardinia College in a seven goal thriller.

Olivia Parrington gave the home side the lead in the 4th minute, before Kardinia’s Caelli Wood scored the first of her two goals for the afternoon in the 14th minute to make it 1-1. Carly Spehar’s goal gave Kardinia the lead in the 22nd minute, before Ruby Mccormack restored parity just three minutes later.

An Alyse Lyndal Cook strike in the 39th minute ensured the home side went into the sheds 3-2 up. In the second half, however, it was the visitors that went home with all three competition points after Holly Ryan found the back of the net in the 77th minute and Wood completed her brace and the match winner in the 85th minute.

In the round’s final game, last season’s undisputed champions Deakin Ducks travelled to Stead Park and completely annihilated an inexperienced Geelong outfit to win 9-0. Hannah Gordon was the star of the show with a massive five goal haul, while Kim Ferguson (2), Anastasia Globa and Imogen Pratt were the other goal scorers for the Duckettes.
