KHBA Junior Domestic Basketball in 2022 - Team organisation session this Wednesday

After the selection processes for Kings teams last year we indicated that there would be an new Domestic competition that would provide an opportunity to play against teams from other Associations. Below is a document that gives some of the background to this and details of how the competition will run this year.

You are invited to join a team for this new competition. You can do this in one of the following ways:

  • If you have already been in a team playing in previous Domestic competitions you can enter that team into the new competition.
  • You can form a new team with a group of friends or a school based team.
  • We can form a team from players wanting to be involved who don’t yet have a team. We will start off with friendship groups and then add to those groups so you have a minimum of 6 players.

On Wednesday 21 February we will be running some short sessions to organise teams along these lines. The format will be to get teams organised and then have some scrimmages to check teams have a reasonable balance of players. There is no cost to these sessions. Times at this stage will be:

4pm     U12 Boys and U12 Girls

5pm     U14 and U16 Boys

6pm     U18 Boys

These times may vary depending on the number enrolled in each session. If you cannot make this session but have a group of friends you want to play with, make sure your friends know to include you in their team!

Each team will need an adult who is prepared to manage the team. While the competition is set to start in the first week of March (less than 2 weeks away) there will be the option for late entries if we need a bit more time to get organised

We also indicated that training would be available for those who want it so they continue to develop their skills. This will be available whether you decide to be in a team or not. To enable this we have established the Kings Domestic Academy. The Academy will be open to all Domestic players and to those who don’t have a team. Sessions will run on Monday and Wednesdays between 4 and 6pm and will run on a term by term basis. The cost will be in the order of $10/week.

To RSVP for either the teams organising sessions or to express interest in the training please complete the form on the link below.

We would appreciate you completing the form even if you don’t intend to be involved so that we know who to follow up.

If you already have a team organised please register your team. To register a team you need a minimum of 6 players. Note: you can register a team with less than 6 players and we can allocate additional players to your team.

KHBA Junior Domestic Basketball in 2022

Some significant changes have been made to the after school (Domestic) competitions for 2022. KHBA has combined with Hobart Phoenix and Glenorchy Spartans to create the Western Basketball Conference so our junior domestic teams can play against each other.

This opens up some exciting opportunities but also will present some challenges. We need to change the way we do some things so we can all work together in a consistent way.

Why Change?

There are several reasons driving this change. These include:

  • With stricter entry requirements into the representative competition, there are fewer Kings representative teams than previously and more players who have missed out on Kings selection. This new competition will give players the opportunity to play against teams from other Associations in a Domestic competition.
  • In the first half of the year we usually have less teams which makes it hard to create competitions without combining age groups together or putting girls into boys competitions.
  • By combining with Hobart and Glenorchy we will have more teams in each age group. This means:
    • It is more likely we can run separate girls competitions.
    • With more boys teams we can split into Divisions where necessary to provide for more even games.
    • With more teams there is greater interest as you are not playing the same teams so frequently.

What Has Changed?

Divisions – we have changed back to age group divisions rather than school grades to be consistent with what other Associations and most other competitions do. The good news about this is that if you played in a team last year the same team can play together this year.

  • Grade 3/4 last year becomes U12 this year (turning 10 or 11 this year)
  • Grade 5/6 last year becomes U14 this year (turning 12 or 13 this year)
  • Grade 7/8 last year becomes U16 this year (turning 14 or 15 this year)
  • Grade 9/10 last year becomes U18 this year (turning 16 or 17 this year)

Venues and Days – not all games can be played at KSC.

  • U10 Boys and Girls will be at Hillyard Christian School (West Hobart) on Sundays.
  • All girls age groups will be at Swisherr in town as it is the most central venue on Tuesdays.
  • U12, U14 and U16 Boys will be played at KSC, Swisherr and Moonah on Thursdays. When teams from KHBA play each other games will be at KSC, when they play against Hobart or Glenorchy teams games will be at Swisherr. (Hobart and Glenorchy will play their other games at Moonah.)
  • U18 Boys will be at Moonah on Sundays.

Team Entries – teams can be entered either as:

  • Kings teams (particularly for those who tried for Kings representative teams)
  • School based teams
  • Groups of friends playing as a team

Individuals can also express interest and we will try to place them in teams where possible.

Training

Training is not compulsory, but age-group based training sessions will be offered for those who want to train. Due to court availability these sessions will most likely be on a Monday or Wednesday between 4 and 6pm.
