R1: Hawks, Gargoyles Record Wins While Rest of League Washed Out
The opening round of the 2017 AFLO season didn’t go as planned. Unseasonsal rain hit Humber South hard and it wasn't able to drain in time for Round One. There were three matches that were postponed. This meant the Dingos, Eagles, Roos, Swans, Rebels and Wildcats did not play on Saturday. The AFLO have advised they will reschedule these lost games for later in the season.
Two games of football did go ahead. Both were played at Margaret Greene Reserve.
Grand River 14.7 (91) def Central Blues 10.9 (69)
The Gargoyles kicked off their 2017 campaign with a 22-point win, after a dominant second half at Margaret Greene Reserve on Saturday. Scores were level at the main break but the Gargs shifted gears and kicked 7.4 to 3.6 in the last two quarters. The third quarter proved to be a match-wining one for the Gargoyles, kicking 4.0 to 0.1. For the Gargoyles Joshua Ross kicked six goals while Andrew Matthews booted four. Nathan Millar and Brian Correia were named in the best. Daniel Mccullough kicked four goals for the Blues and had some help with Tim Trembath who put through two majors. Tristan Thorman and Riley Armstrong stood out for the losing side. Scores can be found here.
Broadview Hawks 16.16 (112) def HP Demons 7.5 (47)
Nick Shuttleworth led from the front and bagged six goals as the Hawks accounted for the Demons by 65-points on Saturday. The boys from Broadview had accumulated 18 scoring shots to four and a 39-point buffer by half time. Despite a spirited effort in the second half by the Demons, the Hawks were too good with quarters of 3.3 and 5.3 to finish strongly. Connor Dullard finished the game with three goals and Nathan Cragg kicked two. Nick Shuttleworth, Pablo Pineda-Willis and James Kenyon Brown were solid for the Hawks. Allen Kim was the leading goal scorer for the Demons while Ryan Hayes and Jeff Simnett provided run and spark. Scores can be found here.
