Titans stand tall in 2013 SRL grand final
Chaffey Titans have been crowned the 2013 Sunraysia Rugby League premiers after outlasting Mildura Tigers 22-20 in an enthralling grand final during hot conditions at Nichols Point.
Going in as outsiders, Mildura Tigers matched the minor premiers attack early through a strong defensive effort that ensured tries were at a premium and set a precadent for the rest of the game.
Chaffey held a slim lead at half-time and started after the break with an early blitz that threatened to blow the contest wide open.
The Tigers gallantly fought back and were on the verge of taking the lead in the dying stages before the final siren sounded.
In the final analysis, missed conversions proved the difference and the Titans proved again why they are the region's form side.
Titans hero Mika Lui was named man of the match and received the Steve Hingano medal in recognition of his efforts.
In the 28-degree conditions, both teams managed to maintain a fast pace for the entire grand final, leaving the crowd thoroughly entertained, including officials from the Victorian Rugby League travelling from Melbourne.
Local police also praised the large crowd for its good behaviour.
