2012 North Brisbane Cup - 29 September 2012
Special classes
Planning
The North Brisbane Junior Motorcycle Club is currently planning the 2012 North Brisbane Cup. While we host Queensland and Australian Championships each year, the North Brisbane Cup is our major open feature event.
We are very keen to attract as many entrants as possible from outside the dirt track community in a variety of classes to make the meeting a spectacle that will attract the paying public to watch.
We are, therefore, gauging the interest of new dirt trackers, super moto competitors, women, classics and over 40s in entering so that we can best structure the program and prize money to give all competitors a chance at winning at this feature meeting. As in the past couple of years, we will again open classes to new dirt trackers, women and over 40s. This year we also aim to include a super moto class and a classic class.
Of course, we will be offering a range of senior and junior dirt track classes.
The track
This year, for the first time we propose to include an American TT style 'jump', nothing too
radical but a change from 'flat track'. Competitors who do not want to attack the hump will be
able to ride around the side.
The special classes
New dirt trackers
This year we will tighten the qualifying rules for this class, as we have had a few 'burglars' in the past coupe of years. The following will not be eligible to enter the New Dirt Trackers' class:
• Any rider who has previously been a junior or senior A grade dirt track competitor.
• Pro class MX riders.
• Any rider who has competed regularly at dirt track or long track within the past 3 years.
• A and B grade speedway riders.
We want this class to be exclusively for those MA licence holders who want to try competitive dirt track as novices, not returnees who see it as an opportunity to cherry pick easy prize money. We want the genuine new dirt trackers to have a chance of winning.
Super moto
We also intend to include a super moto class for super motos with 17" wheels, front and rear. Competitors in this class will be able to use any tyres they choose. The surface is graded and water decomposed granite. So keep that in mind when choosing your tyres.
Womens' class
Any woman with an SNA MA licence is entitled to enter this class. Women can, of course, enter any other class for which they have an eligible motorcycle.
Over 40s class
We will again run an over 40s class for the mature competitors. The only restrictions will be that you must have turned 40 before 1 January 2012 and have an eligible motorcycle with a rear dirt track tyre.
Classic class
If we get sufficient interest, we will include a class for pre-1985 bikes.
Rear tyres for MX bikes
Knobby rear tyres are prohibited on our dirt track. This has, in the past, been a problem for riders with MX bikes with 19" wheels because of the unavailability of 19" rear dirt track tyres.
To use a suitable rear dirt track tyre, competitors had to buy an 18" wheel. The good news is that has now changed with several suitable dirt track tyres now available in 19"
We will specify a range of 19" rear dirt track tyres entrants with 19" rear wheels will be allowed to use and which provide competitive grip. Tyres for Bikes (http://tyres4bikes.com.au/) (phone 07 3262 4377) has agreed to supply both 18" and 19" rear dirt track tyres at a discount to entrants in the New Dirt Trackers Class, the over 40s class and the women's class.
Format
This year all events (other than for juniors on 65cc and 85cc 2 stroke/150 4 stroke class) will be run as individual heats (5 rounds for 12 entrants or less and 4 rounds with a repechages for 12 or more entrants in a class) and then feature finals. The feature races will long finals, 10 laps or more.
We will run junior classes as heats with team finals with teams being randomly selected by the race secretary from the top 24 qualifiers following the heats. The juniors love the team format and it assists them with making new friends in the pits.
What we need to know
MA SNA licence holders interested in entering any of the New Dirt Trackers class, the Super Moto class, the Women's class or the Over 40s class in the North Brisbane Cup please contact Jim Feehely at jimfeehely@bigpond.com or on 0419 720 687 to express their interest.
If we have some idea of the popularity of these special classes before we issue supplementary regulations (late August 2012) that will greatly assist us with promotion for the North Brisbane Cup to ensure a good spectator crowd. If we are confident we have a show to attract a crowd, sponsors will be more ready to support the meeting and we will be able to pay attractive prize money. So we are looking forward to hearing from intending entrants in the special classes by mid August 2012.
