THE IMPORTANCE OF LEADERSHIP
The recent events concerning the Australian Cricket team has shone the light intensely on the role of leaders within organisations and the absolute necessity of understanding what leadership means.
We are a small four team football league on the edge of the universe, but that makes leadership roles no less important than leagues that have substantially more clubs involved.
In fact in the overall scheme of things it makes leadership roles even more relevant
We have a small population, we play a 12 round minor series, every team participates in the major round whether they deserve to or not, we continually struggle with player numbers, challenges are always on our doorstep.
Yet we prevail – we have a vibrant, financially stable strongly supported football competition, this is due to the passion and commitment from the personnel within our four clubs.
We have done well, but we can do better, that must be our vision for the future.
The language of leadership is communication between all of us that want football to flourish on the Far West Coast.
The informed and sensible voices of men and women of reason and cooperation will help us achieve this goal.
Leadership is about impact, influence, inspiration, bravery and keeping your club members players and supporters focused on the job at hand to achieve success.
Management of your club is about doing things right, leadership is about doing the right things.
I don’t think there is any doubt if those three Australian cricketers had been counselled and mentored in a similar manner of doing the right things they would not be in such a dark place as they are now.
The season is before us, club leaders now have the challenge in front of them of not only winning on the ground but ensuring your club bravely and honestly confronts any issues that need to be addressed in the best interests of the game.
To quote one of the most famous people in history, Alexander The Great, “I am not afraid of an army of lions led by a sheep, I am afraid of an army of sheep led by a lion”.
Those of you that are in leadership roles in the Far West Football League may consider the job is not that important, let me remind you that in my opinion it is far more important than you may even understand.
You all play a part in the future success and longevity of football in this area and the benefits it provides to the social fabric of our community.
Your leadership will impact on your club for some years to come, the future success or failures will be laid firmly at your feet so make sure you get it right.
Cheers and best wishes to you all for a successful 2018.
