The SANFL’s talent pathway continues to strengthen, with as many as 46 local youngsters making their IGA League debut in 2016.
This year, in a joint initiative by the SANFL and SA Community Football League, each IGA League debutant’s local club received a $500 talent fee as well as recognition on the SANFL website.
Each local club also received a framed picture of their player dressed in their SANFL guernsey to hang in their clubroom.
The fresh blood kicked off strongly, with a staggering 11 Croweaters playing their first IGA League match in Round 1.
This included the sons of dual premiership Crows Darren Jarman (Ben Jarman – North Adelaide) and Kym Koster (Josh Koster – Glenelg), as well as Redlegs premiership ruckman Andrew Pascoe (Lachlan Pascoe – Norwood).
Other father-sons to make their SANFL IGA League debut included Eagles midfielder Ethan Haylock (son of Eagle Gary Haylock), West goalsneak John Noble (son of former Crows Head of Football David Noble) and Harrison Viney (son of former North and Sturt midfielder Jay Viney).
South Adelaide’s mature-age forward Rigby Barnes was arguably the success story of the season, with the Encounter Bay premiership player playing a consistent role in attack for the Panthers this year.
Barnes, who has previously played at Noarlunga as a junior, decided to return to the club after winning two Mail Medals in the Great Southern Football League.
The 27-year-old kicked 26 goals after playing in 20 of the Panthers’ matches in 2016 to add valuable support to Ken Farmer Medallist Brett Eddy inside 50m.
New Sturt premiership player Henry Carey made his IGA League debut in Round 3, before finishing the year with 15 games and a medallion around his neck.
Teenage sensation Izak Rankine provided a bright spot for West Adelaide in an otherwise dismal season, kicking five goals from his three IGA League games despite only being aged 16.
PHOS Camden, Golden Grove and Norwood Payneham Union led the way in 2016 by producing three debutants each.
