Sports Trainers Courses
Level 1 Sports Trainers
Upcoming Dates – 16th October 2016, 5th Feb. 2017, 19th Feb. 2017, 19th March 2017
The Level 1 Sports Trainers Course provides participants with base level knowledge on a variety of topics, such as:
- taping
- injury prevention and management strategies for various sporting injuries
- medical conditions,
- transport of injured athletes
- sports nutrition
- drugs in sport
- environmental illnesses
- other information that will help create safer participation in sport.
Upon completion of a SASMA Level 1 Sports Trainers Course, you will gain accreditation through South Australian Sports Medicine Association (lasting 3 years).
Cost: $299 per person when booking is made online
Level 2 Sports Trainers
Upcoming Dates – 6-8th Jan. 2017
The Level 2 Sports Trainers Course is designed to build upon the skills learnt in the Level 1 Sports Trainers course. This course allows trainers to develop their practical skills and knowledge of injury assessment and management. The course delivers units such as Advanced Anatomy, Pre & Post Injury Management and Advanced Taping. Alongside this, new topics are introduced to Trainers including Injury Rehabilitation, Introduction to Sports Massage, Spinal Management, and Basic Principles of Sports Psychology of Injured Athletes.
Pre-requisites for Level 2 Sports Trainers Accreditation: Accredited Level 1 Sports Trainer for 12 months or equivalent to one full season*, and a minimum of a current Applied First Aid (Senior First Aid) certificate including CPR.
Cost: $375 per person
Community Courses
Sideline Help
The Sideline Help Course is a 2 hour course aimed at community level sport to assist with the correct management of injuries. It is particularly targeted to sports where a qualified Level 1 or Level 2 Sports Trainer may not be able to attend trainings and games. The course takes a first aid course and makes it sports specific.
The course is well suited for someone who is considering becoming a Level 1 Sports Trainer such as parents, team managers or coaches but currently cannot commit to two days of training. The course covers the following topics:
- Injury Prevention
- On Field Assessments of Injuries
- Injury Management
- Managing Medical Conditions
- Wound Management
This course is tailored to suit the specific needs of your sport and / or organisation.
Cost: $330 (including GST)
No. of participants: Up to 20 participants. $11 per person over 20 people.
Emergency Response Coordinators Course
In 2013 the Emergency Response Coordinator (ERC) was introduced to football throughout the state to assist with management of injuries and is particularly targeted to junior football where a qualified Level 1 or Level 2 Sports Trainer may not be able to attend trainings and games.
As per the SANFL Sports Trainers Community Australian Football Policy, it is a minimum requirement that all teams who have players 13 years & over, have at least one Emergency Response Coordinator present. If not the activity should be postponed, rescheduled or cancelled until a suitably competent person is able.
The course runs for approximately 3 hours and covers the following topics:
- Role of the Emergency Response Coordinator
- Emergency Planning and Response
- On Field Assessments of Injuries
- Concussion Management
- Transporting Injured Participants

Pre-requisites:
Participants must be 16 years and over to attend. A Senior First Aid Certificate is required to receive the Emergency Response Coordinators Accreditation. Participants who attend without holding a current First Aid Certificate will receive a Certificate of Attendance.
Basic Taping Course
The Basic Taping Course runs for 1 hour and covers the following:
- Why we tape
- Taping precautions
- Ankle, finger and thumb taping techniques
This course is a pre-requisite for an Advanced Taping Course.
Cost: $165 (including GST) + $11 per person for tape*
*The cost per person for tape is only applied if SASMA is providing the tape. This can be removed if club or association provides the tape for participants to use.
Intermediate Taping Course
The Intermediate Taping Course runs for 2 hours and covers the following topics:
- Why we tape
- Taping precautions
- Ankle, finger, thumb, knee and shoulder taping techniques
Cost: $330 (including GST) + $13 per person for tape*
*The cost per person for tape is only applied if SASMA is providing the tape. This can be removed if club or association provides the tape for participants to use.
Concussion Management
Concussion is very much a hot topic at the moment and is quite a serious injury that can be sustained in most sports and at all levels.
This course is presented by an experienced Sports Doctor and covers the following topics:
- Recognising the signs and symptoms of concussion
- Returning to sport after concussion
